How much grip would you have in fresh snow (I.e. no ice underneith) on a bike with decent knobblies?

Enough for a bit of fun?

More than enough grip!

Last year, and the year before, I had the YZF450 out in the snow numerous times.

The first time, I wasnt sure how I'd enjoy it, so rather than spending out on MX wheels, I just bought some 17" knobly tyres from ebay, and stuck them on my Supermoto rims.
Wasnt the best setup, but it worked for a bit until I got round to buying a 21" front and 18" rear.

Grip was fantastic. Enough to wheelie even!

(Not me in the pic by the way)

Really? I shuddered at the thought of landing a wheelie in the snow. Next time it snows I'll have a run out, I talked myself out of it last week my stupid brain thought I would die!

Yeah, just keep the tyre pressure nice and low. Smile

Can you get winter tyres for bikes, like the ones you get for cars that are more-natural rubber and better tread pattern with sipes to give more grip in the cold/wet/snow?

I run them on my car and absolutely swear by them, they make such a difference over summer tyres even when its just cold (below 7 degrees) and wet, in the snow that difference has to be experienced to be believed.

Was just wondering if they are available for bikes to to use over the colder months

Its great fun. When the snow is on the ground - head out !

If you can ride through mud, then you can ride on snow. Having a light bike helps, easier to manoeuvre.

Decent knobblies would probably help, but on many occasions just used trail tyres which are 50% road 50% off road, and was great fun for a few laughs.

Ice usually sends you sliding but fresh snow is ace

It does rather depend on the snow, how deep, surface beneath, etc.

If it's not that deep, then often decent knobs will just cut through anyway.
For deeper, I got as low pressures as I dare. Too deep and fluffy and you'll still have issues.

Definitely worth giving it a go, however Smile.
Spent ages doing some really nice 'drifting' on my Sahara 3s on the 690 in the old work car park - just enough grip at the front and just not enough at the rear Smile.

Entirely depends on what size you are going for.

On my Chaly, I am going to be running my Sava tyres, which I used for race wets on the track bike. As they are road legal tyres. Thumbs Up
They do them right up to 17". Think the widest they do is 120 though, which is only good for small supermoto bikes and 125s etc.

I'd of thought they would be alright in the snow.
