Due to me using the bike in all weathers since getting it almost 2 years ago (i think), it's been looking a bit worse for wear..
..Rusting on the rear frame, wiring falling to bits along with the connectors and the majority of all the nuts and bolts corroded...

So the plan is to strip down, clean up,polish up what i can and re-spray the frame and fairings a completely different colour.
All the wiring will be cleaned,re-wrapped and new connectors where needed... (yay for dodgy Italian electrics)
New belts will be fitted while the engine is out and a check over of the various bits and bobs...

Before

No posts of the stripping all of it down as i just hammered out as much i could today...

Stripped out all of the front and back looms, radiator, chain, subframe, front end etc...

Drained the oil and water....

Noticed a few bits of metal shavings on the sump plug, so thats another thing to have a look at....

Most of the wiring has rubbed like fuck on the frame causing a bit of rusting Sad

Heres a pic of todays efforts... (i will be taking a lot more pictures now, esp of the rebuild and engine out.... and belt changes)

It looks pretty cool all stripped down, especially without the rear half of the frame

okie dokie... That swingarm bolt which goes through the frame, swingarm and the engine is a right cnut !
Had help from my wonderful assistant today mr sickpup, who even with his "hammer the fuck out of it" skills couldnt free it...
So all i could manage today was strip more little bits off, random "this looks shit" photos and get the pupski to have a look at the engine to see what needs doing to it.

Belts deffo need changing, was going to do them anyway when the engine was out...
pup noticed some bearing problems with the belt adjuster (think that was the one), so needs new bearings...

Also topic of todays chats were.... powder coat or not to powder coat ? Ducati sprayed the original bronze colour, but i think the later ducatis are powder coated...
Due to money and generally more potch, i think spraying will be the way to go to keep costs down... (not black rattle tin job or tin of hammerite Wink )

Also pup keeps putting ideas in my head of the 955 piston kit... next year Wink

Pics to follow of the oily bits..

Bit of spit and polish needed lol !
https://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p138/lilldic_mossy/a%20ducati%20rebuild/P2195632.jpg

This was a new (second hand) shock on there to replace a busted one back last year.... needs a bit of referb !
https://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p138/lilldic_mossy/a%20ducati%20rebuild/P2195633.jpg

The Engine is held in place with three bolts, one being through the swingarm. So if you ever want to remove the swing arm, the engine has to come out or be swung forward....
This is the pita bolt in question which is stuck..
https://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p138/lilldic_mossy/a%20ducati%20rebuild/P2195634.jpg

https://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p138/lilldic_mossy/a%20ducati%20rebuild/P2195644.jpg

Nice bit of crap build up Sad

https://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p138/lilldic_mossy/a%20ducati%20rebuild/P2195651.jpg
https://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p138/lilldic_mossy/a%20ducati%20rebuild/P2195650.jpg

So..New bits and bobs needed to wack the feck out of the swingarm bolt needed.....

Did you say 48,000 miles on that???

Amazing, that old girl deserves a strip down. Refurb the Shock and forks, it will make it feel like a new bike, maybe even a new rear shock.

me bad.... the punto is 48k (that needs a belt change too lol)

Just checked the mot paper which was done in december and it was just hitting 40k..... only 8k out Wink lol !

That shock was a new referb unit bought last year after the old one decided it didnt like its oil in the remote res and seeped down its shaft Embarassed ...

Things to add to the list to get will be a rear hugger or shock protector...

(just spotted a 998 wsb engine on ebay....fap...fap...)

This is cheap but depends how much it'll cost to sort it

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ducati-848-Engine-not-race-bike-/170784788702?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item27c39110de

There are a few 999R and 749R engines on there too Wink

Instead of an engine swap I'd go with a 1098 front end swap ie Forks and radial brakes

Video for mr sick pup.... we need a long shaft and to bang it real hard
Wink

Think i payed about £3.5 or £4k for it about 2 years ago.... lozzy should remember... she took me pillion for the first time up to monmouth to pick it up...

They seem to hover around the £3k-£4k mark these days.... 996 and the 998 go for about £6k-£7k...
Foggy reps seen go for at least £9k-£12k on ebay Shocked

748s go for £2k-£3.5k....

Those prices differ if your talking s,sps,sp,r versions... so many different prices,so many different versions, different mileage, conditions etc...

Well pup knows that i fell in love with his hammer... i liked the way it felt in my hand, so hard and heavy which give a reassuring thump when ever i hit it...
.... So today i bought my own dead blow hammer... new favourite tool ! (what did you think i ment Wink ) Hitting stuff has never been so much fun !!!

Got home from work to have another go at getting this blasted swing arm bolt out with a combo 14mill allen key socket on a huge breaker bar on one end while banging the feck out of the other side with a long shaft... lol...

Swing arm bolt does now turn better, its just getting the damn thing out... After googling and youtubing more videos i think i know where im going wrong...another attempt tmrw after work...

I cant make up my mind; whether this is:-

a) Vilification of all those Ducatisti who do no more than 300 miles a year, on sunny Bank-Holidays, riding between heated garages and well attended posing places...

b) A Precedent to Decry thier timidity

c) An example that demonstrates well, why the 'sensible' all weather rider, picks a Honda VFR!

If you wanted to be sensible you'd buy a car or possibly a scooter. That said, I wouldn't personally use a Ducati as an all weather commuter bike...just don't have the cash to maintain the habit...

Laughing Laughing Funny you should say that, it started raining when we rode off, then we both hit sleet and snow on the way home Thumbs Up
https://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p138/lilldic_mossy/P1295535.jpg

And oddly, my Ducati has done more mileage in the 10 months I have owned it, than my mates VFR has in 2 years Thumbs Up

I cant justify spending £4k on a bike only to use it when its sunny...

Still having shit getting that bolt out... it has moved slightly, but its free to rotate but seems to bind on the bushes for the swing arm...
More brute force needed, but time i get home in the night its too dark to see out side...stroll on saturday morning Thumbs Up
