I've been approached by a TV producer on behalf of National Geographic with an interest in doing a feature on me and my time in the Japanese concentration camp. I've sent my first reply, saying I have no problems with her suggestion of an in-principal interview but obviously I'd like to score some moolah. So my question is do these sorts of affairs pay a standard fee or whatnot?

You used to get a free t-shirt if you wrote an article for Used Motorcycle Guide and they published it.

So in answer to your question. I have no idea.

Hetzer, I suspect they might give you something if they use a lot of the material they get from you. Its not going to be a fortune. Maybe a few hundred quid max.

...However, I'm going to say this because I have some respect for you and understand that you are a strongly principled man. They will more than likely spin what you say to fit whatever their aim is. You think newspaper journo's are bad, documentary filmmakers can be worse. I'm not saying they will, but they could use your material entirely out of context and make you look like someone you aren't or make you appear to hold opinions you don't hold. You'll have no editorial control, so you won't be able to complain if they do this.

National Geographic are fairly good as far as I can tell, and I'd be surprised if they did this, but just bear in mind that it is possible that the filmmakers are bottom feeding scum and do whatever they want with the material they get.

Many people might not be too bothered by this, but I can see with you that if they quote you out of context or something, it could provoke anger.

She got back to me with a line about broadscasting rules don't allow payments for stories where there was a conviction other than accomodation and expenses. I replied that she probably wouldn't be interested in my story then as I was acquitted of all charges but she's still calling me tomorrow. I figure a night at the Ritz with room-service and a decent cheque and it might be worth my while.

It's for a series we're probably all familiar with and I've never seen it do the dirty on a subject. Like I'd give a toss to be honest, it'll be in the name I was known as then which isn't the one I'm using now. They'll show me in the interviews and use a "double" for the dramatization (she says). Should I hold out for Johnny Depp?

I got paid 200 euro per day plus food and drink, for being filmed, pretending to be a tourist.
Easiest 800 euro I've ever earned, especially as the whole lot ended up on the cutting room floor! Laughing

Its not really the same, but it might be of use/interest..

Someone i know sold a story to one of those women's mags (Take a break or something). They used photo's, names, details, etc etc.

They paid £600 for that.

Well thanks Colin, cause I thought he meant he was in an actual concentration camp, so I appreciate the clarification Laughing

There has been a bit in the press recently about japanese being mean to the foreigners they deport, no politically correct stuff.

Our guys have nothing on the Japanese it seems.

So hetzers experience may be sort of topical, as it's been reported on recently.

I wasn't involved in a robbery, and I was acquitted finally.

I imagine African prison to be even worse than Japanese prison.

Did the real crims advise you on how to actually do the crimes you were accused of ?

I guess it depends on how much of a story they can make out of it. Mine went on for a long time and was well covered in the media at the time, in the USA, Japan and UK. Having said that I watched one tonight that she linked me to, a five-day caper in Iraq with a couple of journalists I'd never heard of. Neutral

It lasted three days because I refused to let them know where I lived. Nkomo's guys sussed that it was because I had a lot of weed at my place and I did not want a 12 month spanking inside over it, reality was that some twat had decided to give me 24 hand grenades (mixed varieties) as a birthday present and they were in my bathroom (plus a few guns that I did not have a licence for), having that kind of munition carried a life sentence (life was not a long sentence in a Zimbabwean prison Sad )
