Doubt you will have any joy overhead with CI as the weld metal drips rather than sprays from the electrode.

Dont you have to heat the cast iron up before you weld it? to stop it cracking?

It was right at the back of the fire box, at the top so quite hard to use.

Ok then,
The rods used were just normal 6013Vodex, why would I need to use a different rod like Nickel?

You need specific cast rods for Cast Iron/Steel. Dissimilar rods can be used at a push but expect poor life.

And you need to preheat and protect from chilling. Prep the joint properly to prevent inclusions and or propagation.

The thermal loading on a hearth/grill/flue etc. requires integrity in the material of it will clack again and again.

If you reread my reply to yours, you will see I put the rod type in my answer on the sly.

I do know how to weld, and what rods to use.

So WTF are you posting for?

I know how to weld too, and burn and grind and mill and turn and fit and fart and stuff but I don't fire up a random poll about it.
You asked if you should have used nickel.
Were you being funny then?

You used 6013 Vodex, they are a general MS electrode absolutly of no use with CI, It will have cracked by now.
You need a specific CI electrode (high nickel content) pre-heat and slow cool in an oven.

To test it what you should do is lighe a blazing fire, let it burn for an hour or so. add more wood then stick your head up to check the weld.

Just had to get someone in who knows how to weld to weld the fire box at home.
It's about 30yo and cast iron. Had to do it over head one handed.

And just about to light a fire to see if it will hold.

Edit:
Obligatory picture taken by me as I watched

High nickel content rods are indeed used for cast iron repairs. They can be used as a stick welding electrode or as a bare wire with Tig or Oxy/Acet as a heat source.

Cast Iron can be successfully welded with or without preheat, although using preheat is the preferred method. After selecting a method you can not change half way through the job, you must either weld it hot or weld it cold.

If opting for preheat then you need to be able to raise the temperature of the entire component to a working temperature of between 250*C and 650*C which will require a substantial heat source if dealing with a large component. After welding the temperature must be reduced slowly.

Welding without preheat requires that you keep the component relatively cool. To achieve this, limit weld runs to 1" max and allow the component to cool between runs, peening the joint during cooling. Never allow the component to become completely cold until the repair is complete.

Well done for spotting that it is my dad in the pic. Fail for not spotting he is welding r/h since I am L/H and couldn't get in the right position to get a decent run.

The point is, to those of us blessed with not being able to see your facebook page, you implied that it was you welding. You continued to imply this all through this post until someone called you out.

This is why people can't believe a word you say. You can say that you never meant us to believe you were welding, but clearly you did.

Well you can see pretty clearly that it is being welded with 2hands. Also there is a slight size difference between me and my dad. He is massive compaired to me.

I get it now...

That's not even the hearth he's welding.
It's your cage door he's re-attaching after you gnawed through the hinges.
