So i took my car for its MOT today...

...and it failed.

* Nearside front tyre tread depth below limit (although the tread is deeper than the markers on a quick inspection of mine?)
* Nearside rear suspension arm has excessive play in a pin/bush

First question is, anyone have any idea exactly what bush they are talking about for a Jag X-Type?

The office person man was meant to give me a call today regarding what part was needed and never did so i shall be calling in the morning.

But the main reason for this thread is the advisories as below;

* Child seat fitted not allowing full inspection of adult belt (understandable, but both the rear seats have child seats in them. So why did both not get a advisory?)
* Airfreshner removed from rear view mirror (understandable again, but as they removed it and it is no longer there and no longer an advisory? lol)
* Engine covers fitted obscuring some components in the engine

How can a standard engine cover on the majority of cars in the world be classes as an advisory? I have never had this before (and the car is 7 years old!)


Is this the new standard (im not disputing the result) or did i find a grumpy technician?

I'd guess that it is either the shock absorber bush which is just a plug of rubber with a bolt in the middle that fixes the shock absorber to the suspension or the same again but on the anti-roll bar.

If there is excessive play in suspension bushes it tends to give vague steering if it's in the front but in the rear I'd imagine it'd be the same. Father says it's very difficult to feel worn bushes on the rear of the car from experience.

The rest are only advisories so I'd just ignore them personally, they seem a bit nitpicky.

Jack the car up and grab hold of the wheel and shake it hard and get someone to look at the arm. Not too hard to fit either if your handy.
The child seat advisory is to cover the testers arse, the engine cover advisory is a new one thats just been introduced again to cover our arses. He just sounds like he takes his mots very seriously lmfao
We are watched via the computer so looking at this it would appear to me that hes very thorough.

I had advisories on my old 325i because the bodykit prevented them from looking for surface rust. I guess you get an advisory for anything they can't check.

As for the bush: they're referring to the bush you'll end up in if you don't get your suspension sorted.

I could feel and hear a slight knock when going around bumpy corners coming from the rear of the car so expected something to arise on the MOT.

Just had a look at the invoice they gave me and noticed the mileage is 30k under what it should be, and then the customer name is different but the number plate is right

Ill give them a call in the morning as they was meant to give me a quote so they must know exactly which bush...

The engine cover advisory is a new thing thats just come in, some cars are almost totally encased in plastic not allowing the tester to view things like brake fluid levels etc
Not sure why the tester only advised on one child seat and not the other, you will see alot more advisories and failure items come april the 1st....
If you have an airbag light on or srs light or pretty much any warning light on the dash apart from the engine manangement one it will fail from april the 1st so get your mot done the day before.

I had my car FAIL on a magic tree on the rear view mirror.

"Sticker, crack or other obstruction in Zone A of windscreen" - FAIL.


No other advisories. I don't even know why they bothered, because it meant they had to do a retest (FOR FREE) as soon as it was removed. Waste of their time, they could have just ignored it, given it an advisory or removed it themselves.


Same garage but a different tester who I knew before passed it a year later once it had lost the cat and emissions were well over the odds, think he put a sock over the probe or something lol

Had a mot guy call me back to the car to pull out the center seatbelt attachments which i tucked down the back seat...
Turns out they wouldnt pull them out after another guy put his hand down the back of another persons car seat to pull them out and cut his hand on a needle...

They wanted £210 to replace those. Looks like a straight forward job so should save £160 there...

So hopefully thats that bit sorted, now just need to get a part worn and ill stick it in for a retest end of next week

Now do i bother to take the child seat out, move the air-freshener and take off the clip on engine cover?

My cousin is an MOT testing chap, I asked him about kids carseats as I has an advisory on the first MOT post 'babies appearing'. He told me that they weren't allowed to remove a child restraint incase he 'put it back wrongly resulting in an injury (to the shopping which i strap into the baby seat - handy for moth/child spaces), but that meant the belt couldn't be tested, but it also hadn't failed, and the advisory reflects this.

Got me wondering that if i did have a dodgy seat belt and needed a MOT that i could just stick a baby seat in so they couldn't test it. Therefore gaining me a pass rather than fail...

the jag suspension arms have a tendency to crack

we get them from a comany called south wales propshafts they are quite a good company and quite cheap
