Hello,

Well it appears I may have been bought a Kindle, which is nice. In fact very nice, I've been considering one for ages so am very happy.

Now I obviously need to acquire some books. I'd quite like to have my book collection on the Kindle as I've moved house and they're now in the loft due to space restrictions. I have some books I'd like to re-read without having to go digging in the loft.

I know it's a bit naughty but is there a way to download electronic copies? Torrents?

Thanks

I've downloaded approx 6000 books for Ayasha's via torrents, so they're definitely out there. Top-class stuff too (classics and suchlike). Thumbs Up

There's a guy that's uploaded a series of torrents, called 'Kindle Library Complete', or something similar - it's a rip of Amazon's ebook library. While it's a little bit out of date, I'm not in danger of finishing it anytime soon Laughing

There are a lot of free stuff (old copyright). These are available from a number of places including Amazon (do a google).

You can also use pdf files for books that in that format (there are even utilities to convert into a better format/layout for a kindle). You can email these direct to your kindle too (see instructions).

Regarding the pdf thing; there's an app called briss, which alows you to trim the whitespace out from around the text on a pdf; it allows you to either do a template for all pages, or to highlight particular pages. Worth looking at - I've uploaded a few post-briss pdfs to mine, and it's been a massive improvement.

Wow, thanks chaps, there's certainly a lot out there.

Books I don't object paying for - For £5-10 a pop I get many hours of quality entertainment which seems very good value to me.

I can see myself being dragged into the murky world of downloading for nothing, films etc I can do without batting an eyelid. For some reason, doing the same with books makes me feel slightly uneasy Confused

Plenty of places to acquire books as stated above.

I use Calibre to convert/organise/rename books, really useful if you have a big library to manage: https://calibre-ebook.com/

It is. There's a little bit of a learning curve, but it thrashes the arse off the alternative applications out there; especially the manufacturer-branded ones.

I did download calibre to try but malwarebytes thinks it's up to something.
It probably wasn't, but since I only tried it once I got rid.

Got one for my birthday 2 days ago, trouble is I have 2-3 paper books I still haven't read from xmas, so I've regressed to having a toilet book, bed book, and misc book, using the kindle for bed reading, only transferred a couple of PDFs over at the moment, will look into that Briss as the layout isn't ideal for scrolling, liking it so far though.

Project Gutenberg carries loads of stuff that's out of copyright in the USA. I'm not sure that it's all out of copyright in the UK, but as we know, the USA is all that really matters. Wink

forum.mobilism.org has a section on ebooks (look for the device-independant bit)

It may also be good ofor android apps.

Thanks for the pointers everyone Thumbs Up

I did download a huge library of books but ended up deleting 99% of them as I couldn't see the gems amongst the chaff that I would never read.

Unfortunately my Kindle hasn't arrived yet but it's giving me time to sort out some ebooks.

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of Ted Simon's Jupiter's Travels (for free)? I'm about 70 pages into the paper copy but would like to switch over to the Kindle as soon as I get it and don't fancy paying another £7 to get the e-copy.

Even though I work in IT. Own an Ipad and a multitude of laptops and desktops and I am an avide reader.

I have no interest in a Kindle. I don't know what it is, I just prefer books. Probably also down to the fact that I spend at least an hour a day reading in the bath.

If you don't know what a Kindle is how do you know you prefer books?

Edit: I see what you mean now. I hear that's a common argument people put forward until they get a Kindle and are converted. I'm the opposite, I think books are a bit of a pain.

I do like seeing a bookcase stuffed full of books though.

I used to read paper books a lot, then just stopped.

Missus bought me a kindle knowing how much of a gadget freak I am.

Now on the 8th book of the Shannara series plus read all the Hitchhikers guide and loads of others.

Wouldnt go back to paper now, 30 day battery and weighs nowt, yes please.

You will love it, get the case with the light if its available for the new ones. Godsend if you are in the dark and cant be arsed turning a light on.

Got Kindle, 'tis awesome. Calibre is awesome too.

Is it worth spunking £50 on the case with the light? I had a look at some cases in Currys today without a light that were £20. The quality was crap - I'd rather spend an extra £30 for a decent case - at the moment I'm using a jiffy bag Laughing

The web browing is surprisingly good, a bit clunky but free data in foreign lands makes it a winner.

FWIW I brought a cheap case off ebay, about £3 or so, looks cheap but it has provided decent protection for over a year and it is still fine.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BLACK-LEATHER-CASE-COVER-WALLET-AMAZON-KINDLE-3-3G-NEW-TOP-QUALITY-/140679593121?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item20c1283ca1

That said, I want one with a built in light Very Happy I spend long enough sitting in dark cars or on the plane at night to justify one. At the moment I just use a normal book light but I might get one of these.

I would prefer if it was more intergrated though.

I use the light a fair bit, its just enough to cover the whole unit without lighting up the room if someone is sleeping. LED so does not use a load of battery. Quality has been fine, the spine makes a nice cracking noise as I fold it back on itself but nothing that looks out of the ordinary.

I use it but whether its worth it to you..............
