https://www.raspberrypi.org/

I have spoken about this on other threads. Now it has been released, I thought I would give it a thread of its own.

I have pre-ordered a model B (only model Bs for sale at the moment). I have no expected time of delivery yet, but will update the thread when I know.

I do fancy one, it's got the ZX80 kind of pioneer feel to it.

I like the look of it, but they've been teasing too long. Ship or die.

Actually, since they screwed over their early donators in favour of new customers, I wish them all the success that any other commercial outfit deserves.

I wouldn't be surprised if they go bust from returns by the end of March.

I've been following the development of this for a few years now too, it's pretty innovative and affordable.

I can also see the application of it in 3rd would countries like Africa/India to help with education.

I would be interested in one of these as a media device if it can do sound over HDMI and if its supported by XBMC.

I need a case though.

I would think as its a flavour of Linux you could use a USB dongle already?

The Raspberry Pi uses an ARM chip so none of the software that is compiled for our home computers is suitable to run on one, including the Linux kernel. To solve this you install a distribution compiled for ARM.

Debian probably has the most software available, although as far as drivers are concerned it's generally down to the kernel you are running rather than the distro as most of them are built in.

Arch will be likely to support your wireless dongle but I don't expect a great selection of packages to choose from as it's only officially supported on 32-bit and 64-bit PCs.

How much are these?

I clicked on the site but the store appears to be down for maintenance. I'm a student, if that effects the price.

Edit: Nevermind. It's in the FAQs. Embarassed

Mine cost £29.55 from Farnell. My mate says there is a package at his house. It might be that!

No, but it requires some work to get it functional, which is the whole point of it.

It's a basic ARM PC on a board, can be powered from a mobile charger, output to any TV with HDMI or composite input, two USB ports for keyboard and mouse, network socket and audio jack out and SD card reader. Designed to run on a flavour of Linux, supposedly to encourage kids to get into coding. It's more likely tho that the prior generations grown up kids will use em for a variety of geeky uses, media players, NAS mini boxen and the like.

It's still got no case, and they all sold out within the first hour, probably to chancers out to make a buck or two on the latest new trend of the second.

I'm guessing if one finds the challenge of putting a single PCB device in a case is too much, then the Raspberry Pi should be off one's shopping list anyway Smile

"Manufacturing hiccup", paraphrased as "We trusted that our Chinese suppliers knew what they were doing". Doh!
