a friend has just got one, he LOVES it.
Check out the ratings of them, they were 5 stars! not bad for an 80's bike... beats most of todays!
Be worth at least a view, but at a grand be wary. Depending on why its a grand - you don't really want to have to get your hands dirty on a v4 squeezed into the smallest possible area

I rode one, it was tiny, I hated it! If you're above 6ft, you may find it a bit cramped. ____________________ Current: Suzuki RG 125 Gamma, Honda H100, Triumph Tiger 800XC, Suzuki SV650 (minitwin) |

Owned one, it was cramp and the suspension was tired, parts were expensive second hand, £ per bhp ain't great and having to rev the balls off it to get anywhere at acceptable speed gets tiring on long journeys.
But it looks like an RC30, blagable on a restricted licence and insurable by a youngster, which was enough to convince me and countless others to get one |

85mph = 8500rpm in top gear. Having the thing under me buzzing away like mad yet still having to change down 2 gears to get some speed up got to me after a while. Sure it's fun on the twisty stuff, but there are more modern bikes out there that are just as much fun, yet newer, more reliable, faster and better all rounders. VFR's aren't bad bikes, but at 23 years old i just struggle to understand how people go on about them like they're as good as a modern 600 |
I agree there are better 600's but these are 400 v4s which are completely different, imo there is no better 400. You could say the same about 600's - ie there are better bikes which are 1000's.
Also if you had to change down a couple of gears to pick up speed I would say there was either something wrong with it or you were too heavy or you were not changing gears correctly. Mine used to fly when I opened it up and never had any problems getting the speed up. ____________________ "The Internet is the first thing that humanity has built that humanity doesn't understand, the largest experiment in anarchy that we have ever had" |

So as stock they pull alright, but if you try to tweek the top end you get a flat mid range and peaky engine. 40bhp only kicks in at 9000rpm, 6000rpm is only 20!
Sure they're the best 400's, but i don't think they live up the the hype. A lot of people buy them expecting 4/6 the performance of a 600 which they aint. I'm just trying to give the OP some encouragement not to get his heart set on the VFR as the ultimate 400 and 400's being fantastic bikes. An old SV650 or fazer or something can probably be had cheaper, newer and will give more performance. Fair enough if he only wants an NC30, but chances are he just wants the best bike that can be had for the money |

The first dyno print is actually very similar to the top VFR printout where it has been jetted for an exhaust. I always thought the difference was bigger than it appears to be. but that might just be from all the 65bhp zxr claims i've heard compared to the 56bhp VFR spec.
I think the ZXR isn't as good because a mate has had one for 5 years, 4.5 of those it's spent in bits with him fixing it. First the CCT, then the cam chain, then head gasket the list goes on. Plus i preffer the looks of the VFR especially the back wheel.
As said above the CBR 400 is a great bike too! The CB400 is nice too. Actually i think i've changed my mind, XR400 is the best |

ZXR doesn't have the ground clearance woes of the little Honda V4s, but then it also doesn't have that magical noise
It's kind of a shame to see the posh 400s all gradually rotting away as most of them are stunning little bikes in their own right, proof that you don't need huge bhp and cc to have fun, something manufacturers would do well to remember with euro legislation looming ever closer. ____________________ 2010 Triumph 1050 Sprint ST |
