No you need to display valid L plates front and back.

I believe you can get fined for not displaying one

I do... Only have one on the back under ym plate, and i've had to stick a sticker L plate over that because the reg plate was over the L Rolling Eyes

Someone told me it's 3 points and a £60 fine for each L plate not on display...

Can anyone verify this?

I nearly went into the side of a police van today. Dozy bint.

No. 125s don't look cool anyway, just suck it up and put one on the front too.

Or, wait for the innevitable essay from Mike about getting rid of them by doing your tests. Mr. Green

You need both. Its 3 points and a £60 fine PER L plate not displayed.

I saw a guy this morning with an L plate that had been cut down so that the L was surrounded by a thin area of white. This is just as illegal and is still going to earn him the fine and points. He might as well ride without so that he looks like he's got a full license than ride with something as blatantly illegal.

Just have two full size L plates. Its not that hard a law to obey.

Correct you legally need one front and back. Though I've seen plenty of people without the front one, or with it cut right down. Chances are the police are only going to see you from behind so the rear one is very important. If they don't pull you over you'll get away with out them noticing, but if they pull you over for something else then they'll notice and it'll go on top of whatever else you're in trouble for Laughing

The whole £60 and 3 points "PER L PLATE" makes no sense to me - surely it is one count of "Driving other than in accordance with a licence"?

As has been said, I'll TL;DR it:

You MUST display both 'L' plates. Front and back where they are CLEARLY VISIBLE to other road users.

The 'L' plates must also be LEGAL size. This is 178mm by 178mm (white square).

Failure to display them correctly and legally is an offence. You'll wind up with 3 points and a £60 fine (Fixed Penalty Notice) PER PLATE that is incorrectly or unlawfully displayed/not displayed.

Want to ride without 'L' plates? Pass your test. Thumbs Up!

[Laws MV(DL)R reg 16 & RTA 1988 sect 87]
Vehicles. Any vehicle driven by a learner MUST display red L plates. In Wales, either red D plates, red L plates, or both, can be used. Plates MUST conform to legal specifications and MUST be clearly visible to others from in front of the vehicle and from behind. Plates should be removed or covered when not being driven by a learner (except on driving school vehicles).

Can anyone paste the actual DVLA cited penalty for this?
I've head some say £30 per plate, others say £60, others say 3 points per....

Which is it?

I received £60 and 3 points for not displaying both L plates.

It's an LC20 driving other than in accordance with your licence.

Genuine mistake by myself, you learn the hard way I guess.

LC20 is 3-6 points, Upto £1000 fine, and a ban at discretion of the court.

I'd have thought so. If you're daft enough to pay a FPN bribe then you'll never find out though.

Almost everyone who receives points or a fine for lack of an 'L' plate will get an EFPN which is 3 points and a £60 fine as it's the quickest and easiest way for the Police to deal with it.

If you get aggravated about it and kick off and are missing both your 'L' plates then they could issue proceedings against you if they wished but it's easier and quicker to just serve you with an EFPN.

I may be right in thinking that if you cannot put an 'L' plate on before you ride away then they could seize the motorcycle under Section 165 of the RTA due to you not having a licence to drive a motor vehicle of that class? Since driving without 'L' plates is driving otherwise than in accordance with your licence. This may be completely wrong.

Put it this way, just put the bloody plates on or pass your test.

Who the hell sits down and thinks, "Hmm now what would be the PERFECTLY EXACT size for an 'L-Plate'?" and comes up with 178mm!?!?! (yeah, I know its 7" in metric, but still!)

How did they decide on that? What was it? Like the first ever L-Plates were made by a record sleeve manufacturer utilising excess capacity for printing singles covers? (Any-one under 30, probably scratchng thier head over that one! Pre CD's we had vynal records; black discs; 'singles' were 7" in diameter & played at 45rpm)

Must display both, failure to display could result to invalid insurance, which then results to losing your licence. Not worth it!

Go on, surprise me, cite a case where that happened.

Need to stop being a little bitch and go for my mod 1 balls deep Neutral

I made a square the same size as the L plate out of perspex and stuck the plate to it, then drilled some holes in it and cable tied it around the fork.
looks crap but its much much better than getting the fine for not having one Thumbs Up
get them tests done Laughing

That is my old 125cc and I stuck my front 'L' plate where the "Athena" sticker was on the screen so it just covered the bottom of the screen. I cut it very slightly (illegal, I know) to make it fit flush so it covered the bottom of the screen and fit around the small light at the bottom of the screen/the red screen edges.

Stuck on for a year, never questioned about it. Definitely looks slightly better than having it hanging off the forks! Thumbs Up!
