Alright,

Picked up a 98' R1 on Sunday night, after much messing around with previous sellers etc, this one cropped up. Seller was a great guy, and the bike is bloody good for what I paid!

It came supplied with loads of goodies...

Pair of paddock stands being one of them.
However, I can not for the life of me, work out how to use the front safely.
I've had the same stand before, for my TLR, NC29, NC30 and the Busa even.
It's the 2 post / fork type.
But on the R1, they seem to want to just twist round, and rest on the brake caliper lugs.

Is there a specefic front stand / stand attachment for the front of a 98' R1. Or are all paddock stands just scared to take on the role of liting a 98'? Laughing

Now onto the bike.

It comes with a LOT of history. I've got all the previous MOT certs, along with service paperwork, receipt for the harris rear sets, at a cost of £300!
£400 receipt for the Damper by the time the fitting kit is added onto it etc.

Other than the FIAT / Rossi stickers all over it, the only thing that really lets the bike down is the tail unit.
I liked it at first, but the more I look at it, the more it looks out of place.
Not to mention the mega over'hang over the rear wheel. It seems a bit too long?

So here is the bike when I first dropped it off in my garage Sunday night.

https://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/431201_10150649300825606_506045605_9134672_459023642_n.jpg

I started stripping the bike down, and the first thing I noticed is there are no fixings from the rear faring to the subframe.
Simply cable ties.
Classy Laughing

Then I noticed the undertray, again, cable tied on.

Now when I was looking at the bike, the seller said I can easily put the 98 back end back on, it's a case of swapping it back over.
But I need to know exactly what bits are not from a 98'.

Here is the undertray I have.
The rec/reg, and the ECU / CDI both have their own bolt in places, so it's as-if it's the right undertray.
Just cant work out the fixings to the subby.

https://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/420237_10150653022230606_506045605_9148223_2110242785_n.jpg

I then carried on stripping the bike down.
You can see in this picture the mod to the rear subframe:

https://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/s720x720/431325_10150653024480606_506045605_9148240_2094755301_n.jpg

Does anybody have any photos of a 98R1 rear subby for me to look at?

I then spent about an hour with a heat gun, peeling off the sticker kit.
Then another half hour with a rag and some white spirit to remove all the sticky shit.
And that's only on the tank and nose cone! Laughing

https://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/423280_10150653024890606_506045605_9148241_108679486_n.jpg

I was quite impressed that all the fairings are genuine Yamaha.
I didnt realize how flexible the side fairings were! They're almost like MX plastics!

Little more inspection over the bike. And I noticed that the servo unit for the Exup valve was only cable tied up to the frame under the tank.
Does this have a specefic bracket? Where about should it be:

https://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/417755_10150653025685606_506045605_9148242_1686736893_n.jpg

Rear shock, Is it a stocker?:

The rearsets, absolutely mint too! Smile

Seats fitted:

Both seats have Y4XV on the underside of them.
What year are they from?
Surely if the pillion seat was a 98, he wouldnt of had to get the subframe modded, as that rear tube is for the seat to hook into.

Okay, just had a good look around, and found a frame on ebay for sale.
Seems the rear end is as it should be. Maybe it's had a repair at some point?

Yeah, can anyone shed any light on the shock at all?

Here it is before I bought it, and before the prevous owner got his hands on a sticker kit...

https://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/421358_10150650967185606_506045605_9141721_1643229998_n.jpg

To say the seats are both 98R1 seats, they fit onto the 02 tail unit VERY well.
Shame it just sticks out of the rear way too far!
Do the 02 R1s have a longer wheel base or something?
Or do they look as strange?

As for a swap, would be interested, as I am trying to de-carbon the bike. It's not really my cuppa tea to be honest.
It's got all carbon infils, frame protectors, chain guard, shark fin etc etc.
I want standard bits back on!

Spent the best part of my evening with a bottle of white spirit and a rag, cleaning off yet more sticky resedue from the Rossi Rep sticker kit. Laughing

Finally got all the fairings cleaned, also gave them a good wipe down inside using the bike cleaner I have.

Stripped the rear shock off, got some better pics. If anybody can identify it, would be appreciated.

Started cleaning the engine up too.

Also removed the headers, and took the Exup valve out, gonna weld the hole up and see how I get on.
The valve it's self operated okay, but the pulley was pretty rusty, and the cables were a little shagged etc.
Rather than having the agro of it going wrong in the future, I've decided I will put up with a slightly lumpy low down power, for a more reliable bike.
Not entirely sure what the valve does. Done plenty of research, seems to be a bit of a mixed bag. A lot of people think it's a noise thing, emissions, low down running power etc.
No other bikes have them really, and any aftermarket headers like the Arrow system, come exup-delete anyway.

Other than that, not a massive lot to update.

Got new grips, bar ends, a full set of stainless fairing bolts, and some other bits and pieces coming soon.

Also I've hopefully sorted out a 98' seat unit and tail light. So the 02 unit and light will be going up for sale soon. May be of good use to a bandit owner etc.

Shock does as said look like a white power unit...02-04 R1's rears do look long and out of proportion(not a fan meself) much prefer the 98-01 shape or the later 04 onwards ones. Get it back to standard and enjoy it as they are fantastic bikes!

So is my OH. She thinks I go to the garage to fuck my bikes up the exhausts (in her words)...

To be fair, I've only put a couple of evenings into the R1 so far.
I'm quite lucky though, as my garage has electric, a water tap, lights, a fridge, stereo, kettle etc.
So I dont actually mind been in there in the evenings. Plus, got all me tools etc just to crack on and get things done.

Just wish I had more money to throw at this. I'd be having a set of Arrow headers fitted on it if I did! aha.

Ben,

I'm tempted to get you this for your shock

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MacBook-Powerbook-Banksy-Vs-KKK-graffiti-Demise-if-hoodie-sticker-decal-/250923881627?pt=UK_Computing_Apple_Mac_Accessories&hash=item3a6c3a949b#ht_535wt_893

I kind a like the 02 Tail mind. Fair enough the 98-01 noescone isn't as angular as the 02, but for me the 02 R1 was one of the most striking bikes in "the era when bikes still looked very nice".

My mate at work had a Fazer 1000, when his exup went wrong his mechanic pinned it open, he still rode it for ages but said he lost loads of bottom end grunt. If you are gonna get rid of it, it might be worth remapping it to mitigate the bottom end lose. Personally I'd clean it replace the cables and put it back as is.

Not really mapping though is it...

I was in two minds to fix up the Exup this evening at work, and run it.
But I started trying to extract the 3 broken bolts from the headers, and 2 of them snapped a second time. The third one pulled the thread out of the hole.
So my pal is going to weld the hole up, and I'm just going to run without.

I've looked around on lots of R1 forums etc, and everyone seems to take them off. There seems to be very little negative outcome online reading about them.

To replace the Exup, it'd mean buying new headers now, as well as the pulley, cables etc.
When for less money, I could just get a nice stainless set of headers and some dyno time.

Anyway, got these in the post today:

https://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/s720x720/420620_10150658966880606_506045605_9164586_139918042_n.jpg

Plenty of Stainless button head bolts to replace that rancid blue-bolt fairing kit!

Got a nice set of white Berik boots on their way too, as I only have my Tech6 Supermoto boots now.

Nice bike although you will miss the loss of the bottom end power. There has been much at length discussion on www.yamahar1.co.uk about removing the Exup vane and it is quite noticeable.I did this on my Exup1000 a few years ago and it meant having to keep the revs up all of the time in order to not let the engine bog.Carbs would need quite a bit of rejetting in order to overcome this. When I did away with the vane I just blanked off the vane hole with a bolt and put the plate back on.If it is welded then grinding this away at a later date may well be a problem.

Anyway,I had to do the seized screws on my R1 a while ago

Not difficult - just time consuming.

As for the shock, that WP is ideal if it is still oil tight. This is what the standard one looks like against another type

It entirely depends on the condition of the exhaust before you start.
Yours looks to be in reasonable condition.
The heads of my 3 end cap bolts had completely rusted away. Literally had 3 "Cone" shaped tips to grab onto.
Heated the pipe up around the bolts with the Oxy/acc, until it was glowing.
All 3 snapped off.

So I just took the cap off which gave me more material to grab onto with the extrater.
One came out, but pulled all the threads out with it. The other two snapped flush in the pipe.
So I'm now in a situation, where I can either feck around drilling and tapping it.
Or just get it welded up.

To buy a replacement pipe, I'm looking at £60, then I dont know the condition of the bolt holes anyway.

Or for about £200, I can get a nice aftermarket stainlles set of headers, with no collector box, just 4/2/1 tubular pipe work.

As for the shock. It is still oil tight. Took the spring off, and cleaned it all up inside and out.
One of the compression adusters has snapped a little bit, but still works.

It's a pukka shock! It's got fast and slow compression adjustment, rebound adjustment, preload adjustment, and even height adjustable.
Gotta be a couple of hundred quid to buy?
