You didn't see that bloke the other week then? 50 odd stone or more he was, with a team of "carers" looking after him round the clock as he couldn't even get out of bed.
If they really did fucking care, they wouldn't have been bringing him wheelbarrows full of food everyday.

You'll have to work on your "Ohhh, doctor..." professional bleat.
I have a relative who's just been refused her 2nd application for DLA. Her breathing is so bad that she can barely talk, but when asked if she could still drive up the road to the shops made the mistake of wheezing "Yes, maybe".
Application rejected, capable of supporting herself.
Then while down the clinic she met a bloke who is getting DLA, while still quite openly working as a painter/decorator (DLA isn't means tested!) and - wait for it - a motability car.
He told her the secret - you just keep applying and applying until they've rejected you enough times to meet their targets, and it becomes easier for them to pay you to go away. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I remember seeing someone who was at a dinner meeting and someone there spoke up to the guy smoking, going:
"Hey, don't you know how bad that is for you!? It shortens your life span!" etc etc.
He said the smoker was quite abashed, said they were trying to quit and such.
Then he raised a point that Hellkat reminded me of. Socially, right now, it's okay to heckle smokers because 'smoking is bad for you'. How long is it until it will be socially acceptable to heckle fat people because 'being overweight is bad for you'?
How long until we see a fat person at a table order dessert only to be hearing jeers from the person across the table:
"Hey, what the hell do you think you're doing!? Put that dessert spoon down, don't you realise how FAT you are!? Being that overweight is DANGEROUS! Don't you even DARE think of ordering a coffee you fat pig!"
I, along with the person I saw say this, struggle to find a difference in those two scenarios.
As Hellkat has said, I neither know how they can get to 30, 40, 50, 60 stone without stopping somewhere along the way and going:
"Hey, I need SOMEONE ELSE to wipe my ass after a dump and I can't get up to feed myself so my partner has to shovel it into my face. Maybe I should do something about this?".
Then they seem to act all indignant and say they're trying to get the weight off and how it's not their fault, they have a hormone imbalance, big boned, aliens probed them or whatever is the reason they are so overweight. I can accept that the MINORITY do have issues, I know someone who suffers from hypothyroidism which causes her to struggle exceedingly with her weight but the vast majority just eat too much and move too little.
It annoys me greatly that people who eat themselves to near-death are welcomed by the NHS and given gastric bypass procedures and zillions of pounds to treat their diabetes when they could just lose the weight themselves and I don't see why if a person eats themselves fat (i.e. there is no proven underlying medical condition to cause such weight gain) they should be given medical procedures on the NHS when alcoholics are left to die because we refuse to give them a liver after they pickle it.

Not an unusual reaction from the general public, BUT gastric bands do work out to be the economically viable way of dealing with obesity. I.e. spend a little now to save a lot later.
You can moan all you like that people SHOULD get off their arses and exercise or eat less, but in the real world they wont, so one is pissing in the wind by taking the moral high ground.
Obesity is an easy target as you can see money being spent on people just sitting on their arses filling their faces, but as had been said smokers still get treatment for disease caused by their habit (addiction being considered an illness is something of a moot point, as the risks of smoking have been well publicised since the sixties and people still chose to start).
Similarly, alcoholics cost the NHS a fortune. Their treatment is not all liver transplants you know, and the range of other health condition's that are linked to alcohol intake are staggering, expensive and still treated.
You want to be an ortho surgeon don't you mate ? Would you refuse to operate on a rugby player, or a biker or a horse ridist all injured doing something totally un-necessary ?
Obesity is a growing problem (pun intended) and causes us therapists a real pain in the arse (I've long advocated pictures of diabetic leg ulcers on packets of cream cakes - if its good enough for us smokers and all that), but if we stop treating people who need us based on lifestyle then who knows where things could stop ? ____________________ "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me."
