Got to work, put my bike chain through the wheel and locked it, then later realised I've not got the key for the lock Confused

I'm in the AA and they say they could send a van out. I'd have to sign a form saying it don't matter if they break the lock.

I don't care about the lock as I'm 30 miles from home and I'm not leaving my bike here. Has anyone had the AA out for this? Think they will be able to remove the lock? Its a fairly good one with the cylindrical links.

No lock is 100% secure, all can be opened without the key given time. I remember on top gear where they tested the steering wheel bars/locks that you can buy, they got a proffesional lock smith in and the best one lasted 27 seconds Smile

I am sure the AA man has a biro handy anyway Laughing

Is anyone at home that's able to bring the keys for you Question

Failing that is there anyone nice enough to take you home and back again with the keys?

Got a tool hire store near by? Hire an angle grinder, they only cost a few quid for the day.

Thanks for the ideas, although I'm not sure about the legality of operating a power tool on the street Laughing

I've called the AA. While they think it will have to be broken, at least they should get it off.

They've been very good, kept me updated on ETA of the van etc.

Hope they turn up soon.

So do I. I have my camera phone ready. [1][3]

<FX: pats V500 and whispers "soon, my pet, soon...">

And because I'm not totally heartless, I also have a spare bike lock at home[2], so just pray the fizzer doesn't get nicked between Mr AA hacking off the old chain and you arriving at Chez Bazza to pick up the spare one.

[1] Yes, it is funny.
[2] Until I get the FR900, obviously...
[3] It's only a matter of time before I manage to pull a stunt with an equivalent or better level of bone-headed ineptitude, so I'm making the most of things for now.

Is it a chain with a padlock or one with the lock built into it?

Cos if it's the former, just get it cut next to the padlock and then use the next link along. Sounds obvious but when my scooter chain got cut I was thinking 'oh no I need a new one' until I thought about it and went "duh". Laughing

Have a look in the local yellow pages and see if there is a nearby lock smith, call a few up and see if they're able to pick the lock for you. Thumbs Up

I didn't want this to cost me. I bet a locksmith is going to charge like £50 just for looking at it.

I've just had a call from a different AA engineer in the area. He thinks he wont get it off as all he has is a hacksaw. Christ if I thought that would work I would of bought one myself.

This ain't looking good. Just waiting for the AA man now.

Check the yellow pages for somewhere that hires out hydraulic cutters. It has a cutting head and a big foot pump to drive it closed. It'll cut through anything.

Don't know how much that'll cost though Confused Not really helpful, but I have one lying about in work, it's actually for cutting 500mm squared cables, so should manage a chain I would think Wink

No need. The AA guy turned up and had the chain off in less than five mins.

It was a wire in the centre surrounded by cylindrical tubes. The tubes are some kind of cast metal and the hacksaw went strait through it. Then twas just a matter of cutting the cable.

Bazza has took a picture of the lock so that will follow shortly.

It was a Magnum lock and TBH I'm glad its been wrecked. It was a lesson for me. Five mins in the dark with a hacksaw and my bike would of been gone!

Yikes, I wouldn't like to think a hacksaw would be able to go through my chain. (if indeed I had one)

Owing to the shroud over the wire being a cast metal I'm of the opinion a pair of bog standard bolt cutters would of done it. IE that chain could of been cut within 30 seconds.

You'll need the adaptor cable (USB) and software for the V220. I used the V500's bluetooth to get the pics onto the PC.
