Hi guys.

I was wondering what your thoughts were on this as it has happened a couple of times in the 5 years I've been riding. I don't really get why people think it's acceptable.

I was late for uni today and I gunned it from the lights. There was a biker on a new looking GSXR behind me and I'm guessing he interpreted it as me trying to race him. In reality, the only thing I was racing was the clock.

I was riding along at maybe 50mph and approaching a car in front. I wanted to get a better view and I was considering overtaking. Although there are a couple of pinch points ahead and visibility isn't great due to the road bending to the left.

I checked my mirrors before I did my lifesaver. I didn't have time to do the lifesaver. The bike blasted past me at possibly around 80mph+ accelerating as hard as he could.

I have no problem with people riding fast or anything like that. My problem was that I felt I could have tapped him on the shoulder as he went past.

I'm guessing he perhaps thought I was trying to race him and he was doing it as a bit of a "look at me I'm faster" sort of thing.

I can understand riders passing cars reasonably close, because when it comes down to it, it's the rider that gets it. I have to say that it's not acceptable when it comes to passing other bikes a bawhair from them.

Nothing wrong with riding fast on the road. I just don't think it's acceptable doing it that close to me when you can take me out too.

Here's the thread where it happened before:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=196500&view=next&sid=6d72df00fc0270bb269b333bb1033a85

This is only the second time I can remember it happening, but then again I don't get too many bikes on my commute.

I normally position myself out to the far right of my lane to get a better view, except on right hand bends where I'll put myself towards the left to do the same. Lucky I didn't just move to the right without checking my mirrors and was going to do a lifesaver.

I've always thought other bikes are a greater hazard than anything else on the road.

Happens to me all the time in London traffic, just have to accept it but it's very annoying when bikes/scooters get close enough to knock my mirrors. I prefer not to compete and usually arrive next to them at the next trafficlights anyway Very Happy

You say close enough to knock your mirrors off, but what bikers tend to be good at (for the most part) is getting through tight spaces. How many times have you looked at a gap between two cars, and questioned whether or not the bike would actually fit, then gone ahead and done it anyway?

If anything, this highlights the importance of the shoulder checks. There's no time restraint on it, because you don't manoeuvre until you know it's safe. If he did pass you while/before you were doing your life-saver, then you're safe.

I've had it before yes but was it a good point to overtake?

Also, if you didn't have time to do a lifesaver you was going too fast?

I can't go on much on what you've said because I could have the wrong end of the stick but maybe, the biker behind was in a position to overtake, and you checked your mirror, didn't see him, went to overtake and went towards him when he was at a safe distance on the outside of you? But as you went to overtake, the gap closed and that's why he was close?

Do you think it would have been different if you went slower to do a lifesaver to get in position then you may have seen him?

He didn't have enough time to do a life saver to start to overtake someone because by the time he had gone to look over his shoulder the other biker came hurtling past. So its a good thing he tried to do the lifesaver and didn't just go for it, else this would be an RIP 2 bikers thread.

The answer is, people are dicks
I passed a ped, but I tried to keep a safe distance and made sure he knew i was coming
Mostly because i didnt trust his riding 'skills' Laughing

Hi mate.

You have definately got the wrong end of the stick but I can understand why.

I didn't actually move from my central position in the lane. I wasn't going for an overtake either. I was just considering changing my position from the centre of the lane to the far right of my lane to get a better view. The mirror check and lifesaver was to check I was clear to move further to the right (towards the broken white line).

It's not a case of me not having enough time for doing a lifesaver. I meant, in the space of time between me checking my mirrors and seeing nothing, then looking right where I saw the other bike rally it past next to me within a bawhair.

At no point did I move to the right of my lane towards the biker. The biker seemed to intentionally blast past me as close as possible when there was an empty oncoming lane.

The point was, that if I didn't do my checks before moving a foot further to the right of my lane then I would have been messed up.

Happens all the time. Head up the A82 on a sunny day at a reasonable speed making full use of your lane, and you'll be near deafened by a stream of Manny Midlifes giving it 12,000rpm two feet from your ear.

Not using all of the other side of the carriageway while overtaking is a sign of rampant faggotry, needless to say. Wink

Fair enough. As that's the case ignore what I said as it doesnt apply but weren't sure so thought I'd ask.

I get what you mean though, usually the scooter riders in London that annoy me the most (some are okay before I get jumped on)
