I have an NSR 125 Y reg. I noticed that my bike had some problems starting a while ago (battery problems?) so I got a new battery and that seemed to sort out the problem.

Unfortunately the problem seems to be coming on again after having the new battery for around a month.

Symtoms:

*When pressing the ignition switch all the lights on the dash dim signaling low battery power.

*When my main lights are on and indicating whilst stationary at traffic lights the lights dim significantly until I give it some throttle.

On my gs500 it had a similar problem and my mechanic changed the starter soleinoid and that solved the problem. Does the NSR have a similar part that I could change and where would that be?

Any help in tis matter would be very grateful. Very Happy

Hi

The lights will dim when you press the starter button. The starter motor is pulling a lot of current. The lights will also tend to dim at idle speeds.

However, get a voltmeter and check the voltage over the battery with the engine off, engine running at idle and with the engine being revved.

All the best

Keith

On my speedfight, I have got a Zennon bulb in the front and when Im indicating at idle or when I brake my headlights dim, I dont have a starting problem though.
Alot of bikes do it if their eletrical supply requires alot of energy to run.

Good luck!

Ben

Hello Keith,

I just checked the battery with my voltmeter, results are as follows:

Engine off: 12.6V

Engine at idle: 13.8V

Engine revving: Volts drop sharply, as low as 5V, only gaining once releasing throttle.

I hope this is normal.

Thank You

Richard

definitely a charging problem
at idle voltage should be 13.something but should rise a small amount when revved maybe as high as 14 volts, if its dropping to 5 volts the battery is taking a heavy drain at any engine condition other than at idle.

Try a regulator first

obviously the consensus is to get a new regulator. Please explain where I would find this on my bike and where to purchase one.

Thank You

On my old nsr, it is under the tank near the power valve actuator, it is about 1 inch square, there are currently two on ebay and they look like this.
