Right Im working on my daytona 955i attempting to measure & then adjust the valve clearances..

However Im following the manual (haynes) and it says, remove valve case, remove spark plugs, place it in a high gear and turn the backwheel until the 1st cam is in TDC position..

however ive done everything removed case, plugs & put it in a high gear, but the back wheel refuses to turn.. So how do i turn the wheel or engine so that the lobes are pointing up ?

anybody Crying or Very sad

No expert, but I'd assume you're on the top of the stroke and you need to man up! Wink

I did mine by manually turning the engine over by hand using a socket / long bar.

I dont understand what being on the top of the stroke means.. As all lobes are not pointing up..

Also how does one turn the engine over by hand using a socket ?

Im seriously new to mechanical stuff.. Its my First attempt at doing anything today.

If you have the bike in top gear you should be able to turn the rear wheel forwards by hand quite easily with the plugs out.

Me personally, I'd remove the side cover and crank it that way...

I guess the other way would be to put it on the ground and push it forward.

I had the top off my 750 engine and took the side cover off at the bottom of the cam chain and there's a (19mm I think), bolt in there which I turned with a half inch ratchet and it moved fairly easy.

As for the lobes not all pointing up, that's a good thing, you have to go along and turn the engine over for each cylinder.

Is there a small round cover in the centre of the generator cover?
If so, remove it, (checking first, in your manual, that you're not going to dump all your oil), put socket on the large nut and turn it in the correct direction.
Failing that, take bike off the stand and roll it forward, a liitle bit at a time, while it's in gear,

managed to turn the engine by taking the side casing off.. Id already drained the fuel through changing the oil filter so no bother there..

Seems just one of 2 of my lobes are out, 2 shims on 3rd cylinder, nw i just gotta figure out what size i need to replace them with.. My feeler guage doesnt come in small enough increments.. 0.25 slides under to easy and 0.30 is tight..

So would that mean I need to add about 0.05 to the 3rd shims in size to bring them back to about 0.25

You don't want to be tightening up any tolerances.. you want to err on the side of caution and leave the big ones. It's the low numbers that you need to adjust.

I.e. if range is 0.18-0.25, leave anything 0.22+, adjust anything under 0.22

That's what I do

Anything in tolerance is good. I might consider swapping a shim right on 0.18 with another shim on the looser side if they were close in size, but that's only something you can tell by comparing shims and clearances.

My shimcalculator is still available for download.
