So, 2 years have shot by
Booked it in to my local dealers when I realised I was more likely to break something and cost myself more trying to get the washers out at home.
Was not impressed to start with - running like a dog. Bloke in dealers said it'd be a bit rough due to coking etc while restricted but I was fairly sure that was BS. Anyhow, he said take it for a good run to clear it through, which sounded like a good idea anyway. Now, I wouldn't say rough/popping/farting... well, there was some of that.... but I'd say running on 3 cylinders. So I went for a bit of a burn up to where I used to work to visit my old friends and pulled the HT leads one at a time when it'd cooled down a bit. #1 seemed to be the culprit, so knowing that air leaks could be a problem when the carbs have been off for taking the washers out, I started having a fiddle/listen/play. A-ha! The vacuum tube from that carb to the fuel tap was badly split... right where the jubilee clip for the carb rubber was done up and dug into it. Grrr. Not impresseed with dealer.. again. Cut the split end off and it's like a whole new engine
Now, where I used to work just happens to be in Brynaman, which leads onto one of the best bike roads in Wales so it seemed rude not to once I had the engine sorted
Yes, that's the road going back across the picture
Although I actually prefer the stretch after you come off the mountain - nice straight bits with little jiggles occasionally to keep you interested
Please excuse slightly dodgy camera phone pic: lovely biking roads in Wales

More power?
Well, I reckon that 33bhp is/was plenty to give me what I reckon is a vaguely sensible speed on the public road - I found my speed not much different for a lot of the trip. BUT all the mid-gears - 3rd, 4th, 5th - have become a LOT more flexible. And overtaking has just got MUCH easier!! (and a little faster #cough#).
I predict at least a week, maybe two, before I feel the need for a few more cc ____________________ Honda Varadero 125cc => Suzuki Bandit 650 33bhp => 77bhp =>

Yes it is. But to be fair, it was introduced due to some stupid, stupid riding. |

Not really, as I say, seems my "sensible" setting is somewhere around there anyway... but then I am old (41 in a few weeks).
What I may well find myself doing soon is taking a few bikes for test rides... the Bandit's not a bad bike, but I know there are so better ones.
Actually, thinking back, that was the frustrating bit - not being able to test ride anything due to the bikes not being restricted - and why I ended up with a Bandit, as everyone says they don't set the world of fire, but you can't go far wrong with them.
Bikes I sat on and liked while the garage did the work yesterday:
Honda CB(?naked)1300
Yam 1300 naked thing
KTM 990 superduke
Dueville (told you I was old!)
Bikes that are coming back to me from 2 years ago:
Ducati ST2
Big Guzzi tourer thing
Benneli Tre K (loved that - looked like it came from the future And all the details were superb... not sure about reliability, parts or winter use tho!)
Buell Ulyses
Oh dear.
May have to go shopping, sorry, browsing, this weekend.

the 2 bikes i have highlighted in bold are not for you yet, you have just got rid of your restriction - the KTM will absolutely rip you a new one if you make a little error, it is not forgiving to an inexperienced rider!
the Benneli is also better suited to a more experienced rider, not neccessarily a handful, but difficult to get the most from unless you are wringing its neck. |

quick question, did you have the carb or FI bandit? If its the FI and you still have the restrictor kit I may be interested in buying off you ____________________ Ybr 125 > Bandit 650SA > GSXR 600 > Triumph Sprint St1050 > CB1300 > Z1000SX + FJ1200 (written off) > VFR750 >FJ1200 |
