Putting in the details of bikes I'm looking at getting after I pass my test, like you do, and suddenly, after getting £730 for a SV650, with the exact same details, I get £417 for a FZR 600!?!!? Gotta be a glitch or something right? Probably won't happen when I actually need a quote Razz

May not be that far off the mark at all to be honest, insurance pricing isn't always a straight line of correlation between performance and premium!

The SV is owned, pretty much always, by first time buyers, so I would guess it's statistics for accidents are pretty high, and if the statistics on the FZR are more favourable, then you may find that insurance companies see you as less of a risk on that.

My K7 750 worked out as one of those bikes when I bought it, was cheaper to insure than either the K5 750, or even the 600's from the same year, by quite a long way; I can only assume the reason for this was that it was less of a risk, statistically.

When you're close to actually buying, have a ring round, get lots of prices from lots of companies for all of the bikes that interest you, then ask them to send you copies of the quotes, these should be, if memory serves, valid for a month, unless they've found a way of wiggling out of this...

Or stick some very similar but not quite you (lives one door down, born a couple days after, different name) into a comparison website, see what comes up, then call the ones that seem competitive with your real details, if they try to give a higher price, give them your 'neighbour's' quote reference number and ask them to explain the difference!

It will work when you ask them, remember that these are quotes you can accept instantly and be covered. FZR (and ZZR) are two bikes that are under-quoted compared to similar bikes of a similar age (and horsepower).

My quote for a '91 CBR600 was £450
My quote on a '91 FZR600 was £182 (and I rang them up and got commuting, pillion and an extra 3,000 miles thrown in for an extra tenner).
It's just cheap to insure, simple as that. Prices may go up across the board but it'll still stay relatively cheaper compared to others.

I reckon the FZR is hands-down the best value bike you can get. Cheap to buy (£1200 can get you an absolute 100% minter), spare parts galore and insurance is pennies. Fit a 17" rear and you've got a full selection of modern rubber (including track slicks if you're that way inclined).
