As above. It's probably a little oil that has leaked past the seals and emulsified. You wouldn't normally put grease between the oil and dust seals.
I have been known to run a bead of bathroom silicone round there if there is a potential water-trap above the oil seal though. It just peels out again if you want rid of it and stops the circlip corroding. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. Its the condensation mixing with the misting of the oil on your stanchions.
If you are doing your seals then dont worry about it. make sure you are carefull when fitting your new seals.

as I said, honda used a white grease to pack between the oil and dust seals. I recently done my seals but because of a lack of oil seal driver I took them to honda to push them in. They packed it out with grease. I assume its a backup for the oil and oil dust to help against wearing the seals.
My first thought was white lithium but to be honest I didnt know whether that was abrasive?
It definietly not my seals going |

Ah now i know what you mean.. They put this in between to act a a catch tank type thing.. It aids sliding on your forks and stops any crap ruining your new seals..Also stops water.
Dont use normal grease,, you want to use a Silicone based grease.. petroleum based ones will not do your seals any good.
Hope that helps. ____________________ www.Mailorderrepairs.co.uk We service your Carburetor's, Calipers & Suspension for less Also Bike repairs undertaken. |

I can't say that I've seen or heard of the dust seal being packed with grease. Personally I would see it as something that any dirt that does get through the seal to stick to. Long term you end up with a bit of grinding paste. ____________________ https://www.metacafe.com/watch/1972097/how_to_behave_on_a_forum/ |
