https://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_163079_categoryId_255215_langId_-1?cm_sp=Intelligent_Offer-_-Product_List_Zone_1-_-Blank&iozone=PLPz1

It's £60, but it's good and because it's Halfords Advanced/Professional you can replace any piece should it break (doing what it was intended for.) comes in a small little suitcase thing too. I have one and I like it.

So it has a socket big enough for the bolt on the rear/front wheels. Looked at this earlier and it's not obvious from the pic how big they go to.

The description tab lists all the socket sizes.

I couldn't find a socket set for a nice price with the sizes I needed for my wheels (36mm + 42mm) Halford Pro kits seem fairly good, they had a deal last time I was in there..around 2 weeks ago.

I'd be tempted by this:
https://www.cgfixings.co.uk/user/products/large/Draper/43647_H31MMC.jpg

That's a good price for the Halfords set for what you get, but not sure if it's the 'Professional' with the guarentee etc.
I'm not that convinced by the Halfords stuff generally - it's 'ok', but I much prefer the draper stuff linked generally.

I'm scouring the internet at the moment. Thanks for the link. It's now in my favourite's.

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/clarke-pro228-19pc-12-multi-drive-socket-set

Everything up to 32 + lifetime guarantee for £37. Add the same 1/4" one for the diddly stuff and you're just tipping 55. Do it on a VAT free day and you're well under budget.

As to a 42mm socket, I'm pretty certain you have your sizes wrong. No way your rear wheel nut is 42mm, or if it is good luck finding a set for it, but you'll need to be looking in at least 3/4" to get that big.

says it's the professional and has lifetime guarantee in the description, ive had my halfords kit for getting on 10 years now and it's taken alot of abuse, in that time ive split a 7mm socket and snapped 2 breaker bars all of which have been replaced on the spot no questions asked, one of the bars even had a gouge in it where id clearly had a scaffold pole over it.

the kit probably won't include sockets for your wheel spindle nuts but if you find out what size they are they'll probably have them on teh shelf usually about £5 for bigger sockets

Ah yes, only read the quick description which says "for the professional", but the main description does specify life time guarantee.

Still not a fan Smile.

Despite their logo, I have never found a Rolson tool I'd consider to be good-quality.

Have a load of their non-blow fuses (no, they are meant to blow, but instead they just melt the plastic, causing your vehicle wiring to set fire to it's self in the case of a short circuit.)

On the cheaper side, I've had one of these:
https://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/ODk0WDkxNQ==/$%28KGrHqR,%21mIE9JBsBfNPBPc0CtEFzg%7E%7E60_12.JPG
And been very happy with it, definitely for the price.

On the draper set:
The 6 point 'wall drive' system used I find really good for not rounding heads. While it's 1/2 drive so the smaller ones are still a bit big, 8-32mm is very good coverage and you get a decent range of deep sockets too.
Overall I'm happy with mine and would definitely buy the same again over a Halfords set.

Cool, thanks for that. Might not be the best name or set but if you've been happy with it then suits me fine. Thumbs Up

Don't expect it to last like a better quality one might - but only the 1/4" wrench broke on mine and probably because I used far too much force on it. That was with a good few years use etc.

If I was on a serious budget, it's what I'd go for.

Just bought it.

I will get myself a better quality set when I have the money.

Halfords 'Professional' seem pretty good but be aware, the guarantee doesn't cover any "moving parts". Fine for the ratchets - they offer repair kits, but their ratchet spanners are around £10 each to replace.

Broke one of the 8mm ratchet spanners. Sent the OH in to get it changed and they told her that unless the spanner was broken then they wouldn't replace it as it was a moving part.

Brought it home, snapped the spanner on the vice and sent her back in a few weeks later. Spotty yoof took a look at it, and said that he couldn't see how it had broken and that he wasn't sure whether he could replace it. OH told him that her boyfriend had broken it accidentally and that I would come in and have a 'chat' with him if he wanted me to. The guy apparently looked at the spanner, thought it over, and practically ran off to get the spanner to replace it! Laughing

That isn't a standard socket set, those are reverse-torx sockets.

I use the Halfords Professional stuff too, good enough for me. There's probably a cheaper way to get decent quality stuff but it's a bit of an unknown quantity if you shy away from the big name brands which are expensive. Never buy it at full price though, they're always discounting it. In fact you can get a set of screwdrivers for free at the moment if you're buying oil (they're good too, already got a set).

Either way though, cheap tools are the archetypal false economy...if you're lucky they'll just break, if you're not they'll damage your bike and damage you at the same time. If you can't afford good tools just wait until you can, don't ever buy monkey metal shite unless you're only ever going to use it on bicycles.

Halford proffesional stuff are quite good. My dad had a set of the spanners and they have lasted years. I think its just the cheap stuff from halfords that are crap.

Look like flank-drive sockets to me...

B&Q TorQ

Very similar to the halfords pro kit, albeit they have 6-point drive rather than 12-point drive sockets. Much the reason why I bought their 150 piece. I've used the halfords socket kits before and they are brilliant. After a few weekends using the TorQ kit, I can confirm they are just as good as the halfords, plus I don't run the risk of rounding off my nuts.
