MOT - Bare minimum

Nearly got my road legal mini bike ready to ride... just want to clarify what is needed for a "daytime" MOT.

All lights and switches have been removed, wiring loom does not exist. The 4 wires currently on there are taped and hidden from view. There are 2 earth points should one fail.

It has a number plate and can arrange for a rear reflector to be fitted.

The frame is visible... I'll get some photos later, but is that likely to cause issues? The rear had plastics but they were beyond salvageable. I "could" make up some metal covers...but if its not necessary I wont bother.

Is a horn required... I have no power source so I'm assuming if its needed I can get one of those squeezy ones?

Hmm, I think I have the rear switch, its never had a front switch.

Even if I can do this... how do I make it so the rear light doesn't come on?

I emailed VOSA a year or so ago back when we were having a discussion on OSS about it, they came back you don't need ANY lights, which includes the brakelight for the MOT.....but to be road legal you do, it's commonsense to have one anyway.

MOT manual says it should, I just basically want to nip around on it once or twice a month, its not gonna be a main bike at all.

Right, I'm up for bodging this.

Going to fit the rear light. + wire from battery to front brake switch - to earth. Run a wire from the + on battery to the rear brake switch and earth the - on the rear. Then wire from front + rear switch to brake light.

Would that sound like it would work?

If so I'll wire that up later and use battery from GSXR to do that.

Horn wise... I'll chuck another battery on there for the MOT so it doesn't interfere with the brake lights...as that looks to be a fail too.

Just means I'll wire a charge point on there for the battery (basically a + wire and a - wire on either side of the bike covered with rubber connectors so I can charge battery without removing seat

Can you not just run the horn & brake light off the alternator/dynamo (via a reg/rec if required) ?

I have 2 wires running to CDI and 1 to earth. It has no additional wiring and is running a race setup so no way of producing power.

Yeah something to do with Construction & Use - MOT only checks the 'road worthiness' of the vehicle, whereas if you take it on the road, plod checks the rest...

I believe the 'original' reasoning behind the MOT is to make a vehicle 'roadworthy' in the sense that it's not going to fall apart, have a brake failure, explode, or something equally dangerous.

Though there are some bits in there that don't relate to mechanical safety like the rear reflector requirement, mirrors, etc.

A lot of this stuff depends on the year of manufacture.

A new (ish) vehicle won't get away with much, where as a vintage job will get away with murder.

Why don't you just have a chat with the MOT man, Paddy?

They will usually give advice before you present the bike, and even if you fail the MOT, most places offer a free retest, anyway.

And some common sense with wiring.

You dont need any lights what so ever.
To wire a stop light, just get an LED type one. I have an enduro style rear fender you can have, with an LED light in if you wanna collect it.

Basic way to wire it is;


Live from battery to switch on front brake.
Take a feed from that live, and run it to the rear brake switch.
Then from the other side of the front brake switch, run it all the way to the rear light.
Take a feed from that wire, and run it to the output of the rear brake switch.
Then return the tail light to the neg on the battery.
