Evening All

Thought I'd post a few pics of my cheapo DIY top box.

We had a spare Stanley Fatmax toolbox at work that had been sitting around for a while so I decided I'd have a go at mounting it on my bike.

I used u-bolts to fix it to the rack which I bolted through a bit of Ally chequer plate to try and spread the load a bit, I need to swap the plain nuts for Nylocs and that'll do for now.

It looks pretty crap but I can now get more beer I mean shopping when I pop to the shop.

Ghetto tastic, shorten the bolts though or they'll put holes in your shopping. Can you fit your lid in it?

Cheers Smile

I was planning to shorten the bolts, I've also got a bit of foam out of an old instrument case to put in there to cover the nuts/bolts.

I haven't tried my lid but I don't think it will quite go in there.

I'd put fatter washers under the bolts myself..

What thickness is the chequerplate?

I'm not sure what thickness the plate is I'll have to measure it, it's not the really thin stuff though.

You might want to make sure the lid can be locked down. Otherwise you might get home and wonder where the shopping's gone!
I know the box has clips, but, go over a bump and the lid is likely to fly up and lock back down as if nothing has happened.

I had a cheap back box that seemed to clip down, got home, knew I'd bought some tins but they weren't there. Assumed I had left them at the shop :s

OH was riding the bike and I was following behind when I saw the back box fly open and lock down again. Worked out where the tins had gone Smile

Apart from that, very innovative.

Oooh, hark at Sir lording it over us with his fancy name brand toolbox. Some of us had to make do with bolting on B&Q value toolboxes, bought on sale. Razz

My suggested ghetto pimp mod would be an LED brake light glued or zip tied to the top of the box. Wink

Ha, nice bit of DIY there!

I've got exactly the same bike, colour the lot.

Do you rate the handguards?? I was thinking of getting a set, did you get them or did they come with the bike?

Cheers

Did I mention that it's fully waterproof Very Happy or at least it was until I drilled 8 12mm holes in it.

Zip tied at a jaunty angle would work best for the LED light.

I think I need to cover it in various stickers to complete the "look"

Yeah they do a pretty good job of cutting the wind chill down a bit, and of course they can be extended with milk cartons for the ghetto look Rogerborg stylee Smile

I've lined the bottom with foam now and put a little bungee in to hold a few of my bits, I still need to cut the bolts but didn't get a chance in between the showers today.

Bottle of beer for size comparison Smile
