I imagine its engine out, upside down, sump off, one rods 2 rod bolts out, clean, thread lock, reinstall, move onto the next one until all 4 rods are done then refit sump and refit engine.
But youve paid £14k for BMW to build your bike, not £14k to have a local dealer BMW spanner man who has been brought in for who knows where to rip the engine out, screw around with its internals and sling it back in the frame.
Ive 12 years experience of selling performance car parts. Im not talking neons and stick on filler caps. Im talking bits to build 788bhp Time Attack Pro Imprezas and the like. In that 12 years Ive seen evidence that makes it extremely clear that the factories are far far better at building engines than the vast majority of after market tuners. Bearing in mind that aftermarket tuners build engines day in day out, what chance has a dealer spanner money with most probably zero tuning experience and zero experience of stripping S1000RR engines got? Id be really fucked off if I had my BMW recalled and had to hand it over to said monkey. ____________________ CRF450R supermoto, Husaberg 650 supermoto, Triumph Street Triple R |

much cheaper to swap the entire engine and scrap the old one than it is to pay someone to fix them. |
Hmmmmmmmm, interesting. Not sure whether it would, and there are quite a few variables involved - actual cost of an engine, potential to reuse the parts of swapped and then stripped engines, labour time for the 2 operations, shipping, risk of refailure etc etc. It would be a good bit of analysis work to determine which is actually cheaper.
Ultimately, if it was a car with such a problem I'd agree with you 100%, as they build car engines in such huge quantities it would be a no brainer. However junking all those specialist S1000R engines really would not appeal, but I think there would also be significant production capacity issues to build all the replacements in the 1st place, as well as keeping up with normal demand.
Badly written, but you get my point, maybe.
I reckon the dealers will do it... |

Main dealer mechanics (approved workshops) are factory trained but to what extent I don't know ____________________ Bikes : 2006 CBR125R - 2004 Monster 620ie - 2004 ZX-6R B1H - 2005 Monster S2R 800 - 2011 Street Triple - 2009 Streetfighter 1098 - 2014 ZX-6R 636

S1000RRs are probably shite coz they seem to be benchmarks for the superbikes now.
The likes of the Ducati Paninigale which claims near 200BHP pitched against the BMW but with 100+ Eyetye CCs more to do it.

Well a trio of pretty special recalls was issued this month by two of the world's best-known luxury car makers. Germany's BMW is fixing cars for head rest problems, and a defect that could trigger extreme emissions. Meanwhile, Ferrari of Italy says that some of its California and Italia 458 automobiles could get just a little shaky. You may read further at: BMW and Ferrari recall more than 32,000 cars worldwide to avoid recalls. |
