Hi forum, I'm new here as you can tell, although I've often read topics in the past. I'd like to share with you my lasting impression after my bike tests on Monday April 23rd.

I've been riding geared bikes for about 10 years now - I'm 17 - and I started off doing trials. I did my CBT last year and have 12 months road experience on a geared 50. Anyway, enough of the life story. My birthday was last Friday, so naturally I booked training for the Saturday and Sunday to follow. I was with Lightning motorcycle training in reading and I found my instructor Will to be very helpful and confidence inspiring, despite a few silly mistakes I made during the first day.

Monday morning saw me setting off to Newbury for my module 1 test, which went just fine, I picked up a minor for not exaggerating my shoulder check enough on the U turn exercise. On to the module 2 test in Farnborough after lunch, in the lovely weather. Overall I thought I had done okay and was expecting a few minors. To my surprise I instead made no minor faults but failed my test on one major fault within 5 minutes of the end. I was disappointed and didn't realize at the time, but I had apparently caused a BMW to slow down - he was changing lanes as I turned left onto a dual carriage way, which I could have anticipated.

I am now undergoing the longest 3 weeks of my life, back on a 50cc bike waiting for a re-test. I was wondering does anyone have any similar experiences they would like to share, or perhaps any tips that helped them with their bike license. Or any opinions about the process itself?

Sorry for the boring wall of text, it was hard thinking of a way to introduce myself here.

Mark

Relax. At least you know what it was, unfortunate event.

Go rebook and it you're done.

At least you didn't have my problem.

Only had one chance to do my MOD2, Insurance, CBT, MOD1 and theory (MOD1 and Theory by extent of CBT) were about to expire and I had to ring up training places to give me a slot because they bulk buy off the DSA booking site. Luckily I got in a did it.

No minors.

Good luck chap.

I failed my first test (no mod1/mod2 in those days) in similar circumstances - exemplary ride, one silly mistake at the end. I was cross with myself at the time but it meant I went into my retest thinking "I know I can do this now" and I aced it. Curiously, it gave me confidence in myself because I knew my riding was fine and it was just a silly one-off mistake that earned the fail.

My other half did her training with Lightning in Reading and thought they were really good too.

Move to Cyprus!

If you made it to the test centre, without binning it, you've passed! Rolling Eyes

I know how you feel.

Failed my mod 2 twice now.

First test I thought I'd done quite well on only to be told I failed for a dangerous. Was about to go on a slip road onto a dual carriageway, but forgot to notice the roundabout prior to that and sort of cut up a car. Wink
Didn't actually realize I'd done that till I got home and checked google maps. Laughing

Second test was a complete balls up.
Examiner told me to go right at a double mini roundabout.
I proceeded towards the second one, only for my mind to remember at the last second that I was meant to go right.
Que me swerving the bike back round. Ended up as a serious.

It's the ride back from the test center thats the worst part.
I was just constantly thinking how stupid I was for doing those faults and rode back home like a nutcase!

Got my re-take in 2 weeks, so would have waited for a total of 4 weeks.

Keep checking for cancellations. Thats what I did for my second one and got one 4 weeks earlier than what it would have been.

Just try and keep your mind off it and your test date will be here sooner than you think.

My only gripes about the whole test process is the way you can make careless mistakes that you would probably never do if you weren't under test conditions. Nerves I guess, but it's the only way you're going to get a license, so you just have to put up with it. Rolling Eyes

Ah well, that's just bad luck. If you sat there thinking "But what if those cars moved into my lane?" you'd never get going. I bet the examiner would have made the same move, and just hoofed it away a bit quicker. Wink

Smash its back doors in next time, job done.

Thanks for all the nice replies everyone, I'm glad I made an account. Very Happy I particularly relate to the post about checking on google maps - and I also rode home like a bit of a nutcase, maybe because it was my last chance to experience the wonderful performance of a worn out cg125.

I went back to the junction today and did things properly. What a shame no-one has found a way to splice the fabric of time. I have my test and a bit of training booked for may 14th, here's hoping I won't need another.

My question now is, "what should I do next?" is there an initiation process, do I have to fetch anyone a long weight or some tartan paint? How did you guys start out on the forums?

You need to request a meeting with nobcat to get the initiation process up and running.

Sorry to bring an ancient thread back to life, but wtf is it with those guys at Farnborough. I passed my mod 1 without any minors but failed my mod 2 twice, both within the last few minutes of the test. Both similar reasons to yours:

1) Right at the end on the dual carriage way before turning left toward the test center, I stayed in the right hand lane of the dual carriage way too long. I was going to move left but saw a Golf going too fast so waited and because he decided to slow down I failed.

This was due to me being too cautious and driving like a granny, and also encouraged undertaking so lesson learned. Fair enough.

2) Perfect test session again, right at the end on a different dual carriageway a car was coming off the slip road. I know I should have just slowed a little to let him in front of me, but 10 years of car driving experience and out of polite habit I checked the right hand lane was free and moved over to give him space. Mr businessman Beamer was coming at some silly speed behind me and eventually had to slow down while I moved back to the left lane - Fail.

I think this last one in particular was a bit of a kick in the teeth. Reading the original post here, although almost a year ago, it makes me feel like the buggers find a reason to fail riders just to maintain their fail/pass ratios.

Spent over a grand for this damn bike license now and really anxious about the third test - waiting for the sunshine before I book. Tempted to try a different test center.

The second one the issue is 'inconveniencing another road user' and is similar to something I got told off for on a mock test,

I was sat in a layby with my indicator on waiting for a gap to go. Got told I shouldn't do it as, if someone decides to stop for me I could get failed.

driving for test and driving in real life and being polite are two different things

the fact that your post implies the BMW was speeding (and quite possibly was) doesn't enter as a factor when being assessed.

hope your next test goes better.
