Hello,
I've been offered a job providing I pass my degree with a 2:1 in July. It's based in Fareham (well near enough) and so it will require me to relocate. I currently live in S.Wales and haven't got a bloody clue about the area. I will be coming out of uni with my student loan debt and a grand of debt I've amassed over the last few years.
Basically what I'm looking for is advice on the areas to avoid down that way. I don't mind commuting (I have both a car and bike) and I don't mind leaving the bike ( ) back in Wales until I can afford to buy or until I find somewhere with a garage.
Providing I get the job I'll be starting on £25k.

It's based in Whiteley. I'm not sure if that is Fareham, I just know it's near.

Whitely is on the Southampton side of the outskirts of Fareham. Its easily accessible from the M27 which means any where from Portsmouth to Southampton is an easiyish commute (but it gets a bit chokka in the mornings and evenings).
Locks Heath and Warsash are really close and pretty nice (probs a little expensive, but that's what you pay for looking fir 'nice'), as is Fareham itself the other way.
Gosport is cheaper, but not as nice, and a real ballache to commute in a car (essentially 2 single carriage way roads in and out), that said my sister lives there and she seems happy enough..
Perhaps best thing to do is have a look at property, and we can let ya know how the area is.. ____________________ "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me." Hunter S Thompson

Hello, I used to live in Hedge End, which is one junction down the M27 from Whiteley. Cheap areas to live within commutable distance would be Bursledon, outer edges of Bitterne, Hedge End, Fareham.
It's lovely over there.
I would also look for accommodation around Titchfield, Wickham, Whiteley village...
Places I wouldn't recommend are inner Southampton (Thornhill, Harefield, Lordshill, Shirley, etc.) not only is there plenty of crime, but it's also a city that never sleeps...i.e. continuous light and noise pollution.
If you were looking to live Pomey way over, then west Fareham, and Portchester areas are good (I would avoid Havant, and Gosport).
Ask Pinky or Louise or Swampy for a run down of the Pompey side of things...as never lived there...
And get yourself joined in the SE Region of the forum... we're a busy lot... ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |

Having spent 5 weeks working in Gosport I can confirm it is a total hole and a nightmare to commute in and out of.

For all!
Thanks for the advice it's very much appreciated. I've done a little bit of research on house prices although nothing major. I don't really want to build my hopes up and bail out at the last minute because I cock my degree up lol

Bump!
So I'm now down south and shit is beginning to get real. I started work yesterday (Monday) in Havant (I was moved centres) and I'm currently living with my aunty and uncle. While I'm very grateful for their hospitality, I've come to the conclusion that I seriously need my own space.
I'm looking at a budget of roughly £600PCM for somewhere to live. I've found a few places that have peaked my interest in Hedge End but it seems that commuting down this end of the world is an utter bastard thus living 20miles from work would probably be a killer - unless of course I bring the bike.
I presume lots of you leave your bikes on the road at night. Is it really safe? I've been wrapped up in cotton wool as far as cars and bikes are concerned as mine have always been garage which is really leading me to feel very wary of leaving them on the road.
Is £600 PCM for a house / flat with a garage realistic or am I going to have to bite the bullet and leave both on the road?
Any advice is appreciated!

I live in Havant .... A work colleague of mine is looking at a 2 bed flat tonight in cosham for £600 pm, so it seems plausible that you could find something for that, dunno bout garages etc though.
I would probably look at cosham, waterlooville, cowplain, horndean or north pompey areas if I were you.. Let us know if you find anything, and I can give you a bit of a run down on the area ____________________ "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me."
