Hello,

I've been offered a job providing I pass my degree with a 2:1 in July. It's based in Fareham (well near enough) and so it will require me to relocate. I currently live in S.Wales and haven't got a bloody clue about the area. I will be coming out of uni with my student loan debt and a grand of debt I've amassed over the last few years.

Basically what I'm looking for is advice on the areas to avoid down that way. I don't mind commuting (I have both a car and bike) and I don't mind leaving the bike ( Sad ) back in Wales until I can afford to buy or until I find somewhere with a garage.

Providing I get the job I'll be starting on £25k.

James

Try and keep to the SO postcodes to the west of Fareham. Avoid the PO postcodes if you're able.

That's the best advice I can give you.

Funnily enough, I'd give you the opposite advice Wink

Whereabouts in Fareham is the job?

Edit: Rough location I mean, not name of the firm...

It's based in Whiteley. I'm not sure if that is Fareham, I just know it's near. Laughing

Whitely is on the Southampton side of the outskirts of Fareham. Its easily accessible from the M27 which means any where from Portsmouth to Southampton is an easiyish commute (but it gets a bit chokka in the mornings and evenings).

Locks Heath and Warsash are really close and pretty nice (probs a little expensive, but that's what you pay for looking fir 'nice'), as is Fareham itself the other way.

Gosport is cheaper, but not as nice, and a real ballache to commute in a car (essentially 2 single carriage way roads in and out), that said my sister lives there and she seems happy enough..

Perhaps best thing to do is have a look at property, and we can let ya know how the area is..

Hello, I used to live in Hedge End, which is one junction down the M27 from Whiteley. Cheap areas to live within commutable distance would be Bursledon, outer edges of Bitterne, Hedge End, Fareham.

It's lovely over there.

I would also look for accommodation around Titchfield, Wickham, Whiteley village...

Places I wouldn't recommend are inner Southampton (Thornhill, Harefield, Lordshill, Shirley, etc.) not only is there plenty of crime, but it's also a city that never sleeps...i.e. continuous light and noise pollution.

If you were looking to live Pomey way over, then west Fareham, and Portchester areas are good (I would avoid Havant, and Gosport).

Ask Pinky or Louise or Swampy for a run down of the Pompey side of things...as never lived there...

And get yourself joined in the SE Region of the forum... we're a busy lot... Thumbs Up

Having spent 5 weeks working in Gosport I can confirm it is a total hole and a nightmare to commute in and out of.

Karma For all!

Thanks for the advice it's very much appreciated. I've done a little bit of research on house prices although nothing major. I don't really want to build my hopes up and bail out at the last minute because I cock my degree up lol

I was thinking along the lines of a one bed flat for a short while until I get myself up and running properly.

I live just on the landward side of Portsmouth (Portsmouth is technically an island) and you pretty much have to pass my place to get into Portsmouth from Fareham. Its shit where I am but theres a few decent things nearby. Port Solent is pretty nice to walk around, if you have lots of money.

As Clanger said. Fareham is not too bad and Porchester is nice. Gosport will be the cheapest option because its pretty much a ghost town these days. Many of the shops have closed and its pretty run down in places. Plus side, cheap digs, neg side chav scum by the bucketload because of lack of jobs.

Portsmouth gets nicer the closer you get to the sea with Cosham (affectionately known as Beirut) where I am based on the land side and Southsea (hippy paradise and lots of pubs) down close to the beach. I'd move to Southsea tomorrow if the funds allowed.

Best thing to do would bring the bike down for a day or 2 and see the area. Have a ride around Fareham and the outlying areas all the way to Portsmouth. Never know, Swampy and I might join you and show you some of the reasons the roads over the hill is full of bikes on a sunny day.

I did the same thing at the end of my degree. I studied in Sheffield, got offered a job in London on 17k at the time (this was around 2000 but it's still probably less in real terms than your 25k) and moved to Reading having done no research and half a day of house-hunting. It was scary as anything at the time (I had a student girlfriend to support too) and the first few months were lean but after that I didn't look back.

I'm so glad I did it, rather than retreating "home" after I graduated. I wouldn't have the career I have now otherwise.

So no advice really, just encouragement.

As a fellow mover to the area (albeit in 2004 initially), my primary advice would be to stay away from the centres of either Soton or Pompey, as they are both pretty shit.

Clanger really does give the best advice on areas to live.

I do have a passionate hatred for driving into Pompey, it is a total pain, but not as bad as Gosport, which is absolutely ridicuous.

There are dodgy bits here and there, but compared with S.Wales it's like a holiday camp I would have thought!

Oh, and I worked on the Whiteley estate for a while, traffic in and out is a bastard, but thankfully I was on the bike when I was working there and it was fine.

be it month or 3 or 6, you dont want a flat and all the hassle and bills that come with it .... not initially

work go out and get laid and have fun, then see how it goes ..

you can get a decent room ....

I'm sure the OPs potential ladyfriends would prefer being taken back to his own place rather than a bedroom in a house full of who-knows-who. If he's got his own flat she can waltz round the place next morning in the nuddy to make him eggs and coffee or just look preety while he makes her eggs and coffee.

There's no substitute for having your own gaff.

You're probably right there! Where I live is pretty rough and there's little to no jobs around so crime is always prevalent.

Thanks for that. Getting the offer has been a real quick up the arse and has really put it into perspective the importance of getting this year right!

Bump!

So I'm now down south and shit is beginning to get real. I started work yesterday (Monday) in Havant (I was moved centres) and I'm currently living with my aunty and uncle. While I'm very grateful for their hospitality, I've come to the conclusion that I seriously need my own space.

I'm looking at a budget of roughly £600PCM for somewhere to live. I've found a few places that have peaked my interest in Hedge End but it seems that commuting down this end of the world is an utter bastard thus living 20miles from work would probably be a killer - unless of course I bring the bike.

I presume lots of you leave your bikes on the road at night. Is it really safe? I've been wrapped up in cotton wool as far as cars and bikes are concerned as mine have always been garage which is really leading me to feel very wary of leaving them on the road. Embarassed

Is £600 PCM for a house / flat with a garage realistic or am I going to have to bite the bullet and leave both on the road?

Any advice is appreciated!

I live in Havant .... A work colleague of mine is looking at a 2 bed flat tonight in cosham for £600 pm, so it seems plausible that you could find something for that, dunno bout garages etc though.

I would probably look at cosham, waterlooville, cowplain, horndean or north pompey areas if I were you.. Let us know if you find anything, and I can give you a bit of a run down on the area Thumbs Up

I'll be honest, garages are pretty hard to come by in the "bachelor pad" market, so if it's high up on your list of must-have and you see one you like then snag it while you can.

A garage isn't essential for a bike, but out of sight is useful (i.e. in a garden or on a drive behind a gate). If you can persuade the landlord to let you sink a ground anchor then do that.

I risked my old ER5 on the street in Ealing for 6 months or so and got away with it, but I was never happy with it there.

It is fairly high up on the list of priorities for a house / flat but I'm quickly beginning to realise that I'm going to have to compromise on that to be able to afford to live.
