Testing a starter motor 'on the bench'.

Hello.

I think the starter motor on my missus' Kangoo is knackered - it doesn't turn with the key, no fuses are gone, jump starting didn't help, but bump starting is fine.

So I took it out this afternoon.

I have a multimeter any easy checks I can do to confirm the diagnosis? Would like to be certin before I get a replacement.

I normally connect jump leads to a battery, clip the black on the casing and jamb the red on the terminal. If it jumps off the bench it's good.

As pete said really, Easiest is to actually spin it over on the bench, Black negative to the casing (where it bolts to the car) and then the positive on both the big red termninal and the smaller trigger terminal.

Did it not turn over at all?

Put the car in 5th (Assuming the Kangoo is a car...van thing) and rock it gently back n forth? Freed the BMWs dodgy sticky starter. Had to do it once a week mind.

It would do nowt when you turned the key, not even an attempt to turn. It has done 195k tho, so if things fail it is hardly unexpected!

I'll do the jump lead test in the morning, simple but brilliant.

No, no click, but I believe the solenoid is integral to the motor on this thing - a smaller cylinder tacked onto the main motor.

Well it didn't turn, so a replacement is on the way...

hi dude,

i presume you connected the red to the starter solenoid and energised it??

or

conected red lead to actual starter motor input lead or post?

feed back as could be solenoid etc........
