cam chain tensioners, stuck brake pins, generally good all round bikes not much go wrong with them.

for more info its best to look at SV650.org

I used to own a pointy model made from 2003 onwards, mine was an '04 reg.

Fenda extenda's are also very helpful, reduces the chance of the apparently common flooding of the front spark plug from the front wheel spraying it.
I never had this on mine cause I had my extenda Twisted Evil
Like above, Cam chain tensioner, brake pins, and all that stuff, common bits really, and of course, all the normal requirements of buying a bike Very Happy

Literally as said, but the engine can be quite "mechanical" sounding anyway so don't worry about a few noises.

I'd say just worry about the normal stuff, there arn't really any common traits associated with the SV except that cam chain, and possible wetting of front spark plug (had an issue once or twice when I owned it and ridden all year).

Goodluck Thumbs Up.

Do you mean the petrol tank?

This can be a bad thing as he was currently hospitalised.

They sound agricultural, listen for heavy tapping though.

Only owned one and the electrics failed, but thats an odd case. Suspension is a little budget and its not voerly exciting to ride, but its a good first bike. Check for rust...everywhere.

Yep, machined spacers fit under the front petrol tank fixings and combined with an airbox modification (google chewy's snorkel mod) give a rortier feel. Had this on my SV1000 and it grunted, popped and farted along like a misbehaving pig on speed.

Interesting! What is the purpose of lifting the tank? So the air can get to hte airbox easier?

That its there, functioning...you should hear a little cam chain noise but anything loud may suggest a replacement is needed.

,,SV - what to look for'' I'd say look for another bike. I think it's just not worth it. Many of these 650s are very cheap here in Czech rep. due to damaged engine. SVs are not reliable, in general. Also, don't know how about you, but I find it boring, friend of mine has 03' SV1000S he paid 2500GBP and I think it has not that value, I mean Fun / Price.

Just got back from seeing it, decided to buy it!
Its in great condition (its the fully faired sv650s, looks sportier imo, and not a mark on them - no scrapes, scratches, paint chips etc.), reasonably low mileage at 17k, mechanically and electrically sound, went for a long ride on it, did traffic and country roads and couldnt find a fault, its also got a beowolf exhaust which sounds nice and throaty!
The only slight irk I had with it was after the ride, when I got back to his place, I left the engine running for 5 or so minutes to check things like the cct (cheers for that info btw), and it was all good on that front, but then I sat on it again and kicked it into gear just to check the clutch, bite etc. then when I went to put it back into neutral it was pretty stiff and I could only manage it by either giving it a few revs or by turning the engine off first, any ideas what that could be? It was fine whilst I was riding it, just happened after it was still for a few minutes.
Managed to knock the price down a bit due to it needing a service and new rear tyre in the near future
Also has 6 months T&T left on it, so shall be going back this Saturday to pick it up and ride it home Very Happy

Whenever my gearing feels stiff it's always because my clutch cable has come loose (at the lever end) and needs to be adjusted. It could be as simple as that.

Pitted forks. Dodgy engine bolts (corroded really quickly). You might want to upgrade fork springs - if not already done. Rear Torque Arm is prone to bad corrosion too. Carb Ice Heater (I had mine replaced with something a little more powerful). Yokes are usually really bad for corrosion too, I had a friend mill me a new lower one - it was lush.

I have a spare curvey tank for anyone who wishes to buy it. It's collection only, and is at Garth's house near Southampton. Send me or him a pm about price etc. if interested. Thumbs Up

Yeah, it probably has been sat for a while. That will soon ease off once you've been riding it again. SV's have a tendency to select a false neutral between gears too...I just got used to it being a quirk. Thumbs Up

Another possibility of the gears along with the possibility of being stiff or a loose clutch cable, could well be the chain.
A slack or too tight chain, as well as being short on some lubricant can make gear changes very clunky and finding neutral can be a right bitch.
Adjusting the chain correctly and chucking some lube on it always (I mean always) sorted out my gear changes.
Probably worth checking, as the chain does way more than smooth out gear changes!

At the first instance change all the bolts that hold the fairings on and any others you feel you may need to remove at some point as Suzuki saw fit to make them out of cheese...

Rounded off so many of mine it's not funny anymore...

Ok, I'll ask him to give the chain a quick lube, make sure oil is ok etc. before I pick it up. I'll probably get it serviced next week and ask them to check the clutch as well just to make sure all is well and its running sweet!

If you don't mind me asking; how much did you pay?

I'm going to be putting mine up for sale in the next two weeks and would be interested to know what others are going for.
