Lots of things look the same. If you want to try them please do so a long way from me.

All the best

It may well look the same but please be aware that it isn't. You need to make sure that you use DOT 4 cooking oil. Dot 5 cooking oil is silicone based and may cause you a few problems.

I read about a fella trying this with his MTB; He awoke in the morning to find his brakes had leaked (fancy hydraulic ones) and his friend told him to just use cooking oil, as it'd be fine!

Well on a long decent his brakes heated up, the cooking oil expanded and locked the brakes on, throwing him from his bike.

So no it (very obviously) cannot be used.

A MTB mag from many years bag did actually say veg oil can be used in magura hydraulic V brakes in a pinch - I was about 12 and was still unconvinced.

Hi

Worth pointing out that there are brake system in which you must not use conventional brake fluid. Older Citroen cars (and others such as Rolls Royces and Maseratis) for example.

All the best

They all specify their own fluid.

Old citroens, like the 2cv for instance use a mineral oil.
