PostPosted: 15:09 - 06 May 2012    Post subject: prob using indocator switch while using clutch. Reply with quote

I have this problem which suggests im getting something wrong.

When im movinf round a roundabout and im covering the clutch lever. or coming up to a junction and operating the clutch lever. I find it really awkward to flick the indicator on as well or when going to exit a roundabout flicking the indicator over. It feels like im getting something really wrong, or is indicator operation just awkward like that for everyone.

An example of where i get really bad at this is when im moving off from where i park near work. I park at the bike space just outside the Rober Gordon University building here, https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a&q=google+maps+schoolhill+aberdeen+uk&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x48840e3ccfb8c1c3:0xfc80c3a055ca459f,Schoolhill,+Aberdeen&gl=uk&ei=p5KmT9eBHYrJ8gP9tKWfBA&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CCIQ8gEwAA
I move off in a nice controlled way, balancing clutch throttle and brake to ease carefully through the crowd of mad children from the nearby school and iPhone obsessed students, to the junction with the intention of going either right or left. I then have to indicate but im also operating the clutch so i can dribble along at a slow walking pace to the line of the junction. I could just stop then indicate but thats not the best thing to do. This awkwardness can really balls up my slow speed control as i ficker about with my thumb. I cant just go full off the clutch at a place like this as there are so many pedestrians around.

Any help appreciated, i feel like a tool having these kind of problems.

It's one of those things that comes with practice.

Just wait until you do the big-revs-go-for-the-indicator-but-hit-the-horn manouvere. Everyone looks cos they think you beeped for them, but it's just you being 'tardish and fumbly Smile

I've caught the horn a few times when going for indicators.

I can't remember having your issue, Maybe try adjusting where you have your hand. I think what has been said above is true though, Practise makes perfect.

You said you're covering your clutch while going around a roundabout?

Why?

Just practice by sitting on your bike while it's off and let your clutch out halfway while pressing the indicator.

It's just something you learn to do. I used to struggle with the same problem but now it's just second nature to use the clutch and indicator at the same time.

As for accidentally using the horn, I've done that a few times Embarassed followed by me looking round to pretend it's not me lol

Lot of posers! When I did my test and with all the bikes I had up until 1972 I USED HAND SIGNALS. Try THAT going round a roundabout.

Kids these days. No hope. (PMSL)

Whats worse is catching your indicators when youre going for the horn...i found myself madly canceling my indicators at a guy the other day Laughing

I used to have the same problem with indicators (about 2 weeks ago Laughing )
Like said, practice makes perfect. as long as its not a super busy junction that you will die on unless you indicate correctly, concentrate on just not dropping the clutch and flying into a bunch of school kids and it'll eventually become second nature so you can smooth the fiddly bits out

Don't cover the cluch lever, you shouldn't be changing gear whilst cornering/roundabouting - hold the bars.

Remember OSM/PSL? Observations, SIGNAL, move into your new lane position, SPEED, look... The indicator fumbling should be done well before you get to the junction and start slow speed work with the clutch.

It's just a question of timing, and practice.

I can't understand your problem? I have a DTR125 and the indicators are further away from the grip than they should be due to some shitty levers I plan on changing for the future.

Most of the time I have to actually move my hand a few inches to the right to operate the lights, indicators and horn. I can manage to do this whilst keeping the bike at a steady speed and corner perfectly at a roundabout :S

What bike do you have?

Stop covering the clutch. Coasting or changing gear is a no-no whilst cornering. As said above, try indicating earlier in the sequence.

I'm getting better at tempering my hornyness hahaa and I'm keeping off the clutch on roundabouts. I've also noticed that the switch mounting on the clutch side is seperate from the lever and grip so I might be able to move it around into a more usable position. I have big hands so tend to find my thumb over reaches for the actual switch. Has any one else done this?

I have a Yamaha WR125X its tres coolio Smile

On my CBT, I kept beeping the horn when I meant to cancel my indicators. I still do it occasionally now.

Perhaps by covering the clutch he means letting it slip?
I got told round a tight roundabout if you increase the revs lets the clutch slip you can have more control. That's how I do it

By covering I mean just holding my fingers over the clutch with ever such slight pressure in case a problem developes and I have to make a quick gear change.

On mini roundabouts I often am going so slow im on the back brake to get round and slipping the clutch, you know thekind of painted on roundabouts that you do at walking pace.

Its when im in walking pace situations but need to operate the indicator it gets tricky. In situations like that you have to slip the clutch and have to operate the indicator, either switching off/on or changing direction.

Well I've never taken even mini-roundabouts so slow I needed back brake to stabilise around them Razz although sometimes a little clutch slipping is needed.

Practice will make perfect on the controls, but I would say you don't need to cover the clutch going around a roundabout (this was a bad habit of mine also) and on a mini-roundabout you signal once before you enter and do not signal again to come off - it's so small there's no need.
