So I'm changing the clutch on the Hornet...

And I need to change the plates... there's a big locking nut which I need to get out, however... whenever you spin it the clutch case thingy spins... even in gear it basically moves the bike. So I need this Special tool which looks like it'll cost about 60 quid for something I'll use once... maybe twice in my lifetime

And I have no way of getting the bike to a garage to get it out for me, let me replace the plates and springs and put it back on for me...

So... Anyway I an somehow stop this bugger from spinning or anyone have the tool specifically?

Actually, just looked at a website on changing something to do with the clutch and it says to use that or a breaker bar....


Anyone got one I can borrow?

Got my breaker bar for £15. But that was through a cheap tool man that used to come down the garage every weds.

No idea about the nut though... Use a powered gun + socket if you can.

Or karate chop it.

Don't you need a special tool to lock the clutch so you can undo the centre nut? I've also heard something about having to "unstake" the nut? And "stake" the new nut once you've put it on a tightened it up.

It's not something I have yet ventured into myself, so am certainly not an authority on the matter.

And yes, unstaking the nut is fine. Easy job. Done that. And have a new one... easy job.

It's jut I need to remove it. But as other people have mentioned (and on other websites) I can just use an impact driver or a fat bastard and a breaker bar. So I'll probably use those as pies are cheaper than a special Honda tool which I will use once.

If you've got a decent 1/2" wrench you can usually stick a big bar on the end of it - just a piece of steel pipe or similar.

When needed, I've often used a bit of a paddock stand etc.

For a breaker bar, I'd consider getting one of those cheap 3/4" socket sets at some point. You get a breaker bar, a big beefy ratchet and sockets from 19-50mm for around £20 delivered.

If you ever end up needing a 36mm for a big rear spindle or similar you've pretty much 'broken even' and have the rest of the tools there as needed.

Obviously an air compressor and air impact wrench if you ever get the need to justify it is nice, as well as a 24v rechargeable impact wrench.

I have a 12v nut knocker, It just plugs into a lighter socket. I'm not sure if it would be powerful enough, but it works on car wheel nuts OK.

+1 12v impact wrench for removing car wheels nuts did the job, its actually very useful for undoing loads of stubborn nuts.

mine was 5 quid new from the car boot

I always use an air impact wrench but I did make a tool out of some old clutch plates for the CBR. Something similar to this but I used old steel plates and welded it together.

from what i understand when you turn the centre nut for the clutch it turn the rear wheel while in gear (will just turn the gearbox input shaft in nutreul. you can get over it in many ways, put in gear and have some one stand on the back break, ot at your own risk put it in gear and put a metal bar through the wheel and against the swing arm (pad with some rags or something).

on the other hand just get universal clutch holder

i have, i own one, works fine. you can even mod them with a couple of wholes and bolt and use it as a fly wheel holder.

basically you use it to grasp the inner basket/drum, tighten it down with the thumb screw.

i will see if i can dig out my spare clutch and post a pic of how it goes if yal like

Can you not stop the clutch spinning by jamming a penny inbetween the primary drive gears?

that would stop the clutch outter from spinning, the centre nut is ona splinned shaft atatch to the centre, unless if have misunderstood something

I changed the clutch on my offroader on friday, it involved me standing on the pegs, then putting one foot on the rear brake and one foot on the ratchet on the clutch nut, i then pulled myself down with the bars on the ratchet, which undid the nut while the rear brake stopped the clutch moving, make sure its in top gear aswell as it makes it easier for the rear brake to stop the wheel turning.

OP, if you're just changing the plates, are you sure that you need to remove the inner hub? Or is the top cover also held on with the boss nut?

Any chance of a pic of the offending clutch?

I may be wrong, (you can soon find out), but looking at that, I think you may be able to hold it by jamming the primary drive as i thought.
