Hi all,

Iv found a few at JS, for example i found a Marushin one i think it was called?

Does it matter if its "box" or "shoei", i do believe they all must past the same test, so would i be paying for a brand name or for "better quality"?

what to look for in a helmet ?

FIT a well fitting cheap helmet will protect you better then a badly fitting expensive one. if £80 is the most you can afford get yourself down to a shop that stocks helmets at that price point and try them on try on as many as you can and find the one that fits you the best!

Fit is the first thing you should look for in helmet.

https://sharp.direct.gov.uk/content/fitting-guide

A cheaper but well fitting helmet will protect you better than an expensive one that doesn't fit properly

the best sharp result for a helmet in your price range is the nitro akido helmet as seen here

https://sharp.direct.gov.uk/testsratings/nitro-aikido

a quick google search throws up several people selling for under £80.

a good one to check the fit on i would say

Some of the £200+ helmets have worse SHARP results than the £50 helmets, proving to me they are bought by "all the gear no idea" types, there's no need to spend a lot of £.

You want a nice snug fit.

Regardless of price, it has to fit properly.

My lid cost £10 and fits fantastically. My £90 also fits very well.
I wear the cheaper one more Rolling Eyes

Wear it around the shop for as long as you can, make sure that it fits properly. Just bag the cheapest one that fits well, unless you're particularly bothered about how much it exceeds the required safety standard.

I can't fault my Marushin Tiger for the price: not too heavy, 5 star SHARP rating, noise is OK, no particular reason not to get one. The only downside is that I couldn't find cheap visors for it.

Fit, and more fit.

After fit, money can buy better features, visor systems, air flow, shell sizes, fabric quality ect ect ect.

Thumbs Up

When I was looking for mine, I tried all the cheaper brands first but nothing was suitable for my pig head plus specs. So I carried on until I settled on a Shoei qwest. I'd have preferred to have spent less but there you go. I didn't buy it for the safety rating, just the fit.

All the gear and no idea still applies though. Embarassed

One that fits your head perfectly is THE best lid.

The best time to try one on, is in a shop -with guidance of someone who knows their stuff...and to keep it on your head for a while. It's preferable that you allow yourself to get hot whilst wearing one... because you don't want to get the wrong size (i.e. too small, or it will hurt and bother you whilst riding!!!) Thumbs Up

I offer another vote for fit. It is the number one priority because no matter how expensive it might be it will never work as well or be as comfortable if it doesn't fit right.

But I did buy a helmet secondhand on Ebay for £20 that turned out to be a perfect fit for me even though I never tried it on. Suomy helmets in general seem to be a good shape for me so it was a better than even chance that it would.

edit*
I would also suggest that if you're going to be doing a lot of fast riding or riding for long durations that it's worth investing in a lightweight helmet because the weight of the helmet puts a strain on your neck.

Last time i tried some on it got awkward, small was too small, and medium too big Sad

I have a Takai helmet which seem similar to Box. Got it from Hein Gericke for about sixty quid or so.

They fit it for me, felt good, comfortable for the time I used it. Knackered now because of my off, but it did its' job well. I'd use it again but I don't recall whether there was an impact or not when I fell (lots of abrasion though). So a new one it is. Probably go for the same if they still have it.

Heads and helmets are all different shapes too, so try out different brands.

The guys in J&S should tell you this, but with it on and fastened, try and rotate it around on your head, both side to side and from the back to the front. If it moves, or rolls off your head, it's not a good fit.

As said, get what fits you.

Unfortunately for me, I absolutely love the look of Shoei helmets but they just don't fit my head. They crush my face and are uncomfy. However, Arai helmets are the perfect fit for me.

Just find what fits you best and the one you most like the look of (unless you are going to get it custom painted) and get it!

I use lids direct. I know my size for different makes now so I'm not adverse to buying on line, and you can get some good deals....
