My son is about to turn 17 and Im wanting to get him a 125. 2 months ago I was getting quotes for around £450 tpft. today i spotted a gp100 for a reasonable amount and thought id check insurance costs (expecting cheaper than 125). on compare the market i only got one company willing to quote and that was for £1500 fully comp and tpft £1100 plus!! Shocked what is going on? how can it more than double in 2 months? I'll never afford to get him onto two wheels at this rate Sad

Has anyone had any success in getting reasonable rates lately??

I'm 17, looking at Honda CB125's, Yamaha's YBR and other small bikes.

Insurance is going to be huge, sorry but it is. I'm having to go with Third Party Only because otherwise it's £900-£5000 for insurance.

Mine would be about £450 for a CB125, Grade D area code, £800 bike, stored on Private property (garden).

If you can get it into the garden, it'll lower the price. I noticed that, mine dropped about £700 by moving it from the street to the garden. Just have to find a bike with small enough handlebars to get down the alley.

Try choosing bikes that more insurers will cover, more likely to find a cheap one Thumbs Up

Well, first up, a GP100 isn't a 125, and he can't pass his standard test on it. Start with quotes on YBR125, CG125, EN125 or similar. Go TPO and consider listing an Almax chain on it - it'll bring the premium down even for TPO. More fool them.

Well I would strongly suggest you to check other bikes as well, many companies offer insurance on mainstream bikes at a lower cost. Yamaha R125 or YBR125 is an option. Also think about having only the basics covered, that can lower your premium significantly.

Not being funny, but why the hell would you need fully comp or
tpft on a bike that's worth the sum of feck all?

On either the excess will be in excess of 300 quid if your lucky, the
loading that will happen to his premiums will be horrendous at that
age.

Go third party only, if the bike brakes, pay to get it fixed, its bound to
be cheaper than paying the excess, if he bins it, pay to get it fixed.
And I can assure you, one of the above two things WILL happen sooner
rather than later, anybody that tells you they didn't, is quite frankly
lying, everybody bins their first bike..

Tpft or fully comp on a sub 500 quid bike, commonsense is alive an
well.

That is ridiculous! I paid £200 3 years ago for a yam tw125, which isnt exactly a common bike. As said above having it off the road and in a locked building helps. get a chain and put down low annual mileage is all the advice i could give. Pisstake how much insurance has risen the past few years.

Go TPO if it's a sub £1500 bike.

By the time you've paid excess and the increase in premiums, you're no better off if you hadn't have claimed at all.

Bike cost £1000.
My policy cost me £289 tpo, with breakdown, legal cover and commuting.
Garaged and 1 years NCB. (17 years old)

Just ring up a load of insurers and play them off against each other.
It's better than using comparison sites.
Although I haven't done this as I've been with the same insurer since I had moped at 16.

im 18 and insuring my TZR125 wouldve costed me 844 quid fully comp and somthing within the 400's for tpft.

i got told as my bike is a 1990's bike to check classic bike insureance as its alot cheaper not done so yet but its worth looking into if you have got a older bike which does help with costs.

Or as a last resort, try putting the insureance in your name and put your son as a named driver on it, when i did this with my Dad who has 12 years no claims my insureance would cost me 103 quid

Well with +1 years NCB, and getting older and barely doing any miles.
No points etc

My insurance has jumped from £320 to £540.

Racketeering and collusion simple as that.

Try Lexham out.

I'm paying 374 for the year on my honda cbf250.

Got my license in Febuary of this year, so I think thats a pretty decent price to pay Smile

My YZF-R125 insurance was through MCE and came to ~£400. I'm 28 with a full car license, but it *was* parked in the street in Brixton...

When I came to update the details to my 600 I was told I couldn't, as the 125 was on a "special scheme" for small bikes. Worth an ask?

What have eBike quoted?
