PostPosted: 18:10 - 04 May 2012    Post subject: Dog ball advice Reply with quote

For all dog lovers on here hoping for some advice on this query. The query involved is that my baby 12year old Labrador/collie cross has been having problems with his teeth due to age.

However he loves chasing a ball being bounced up and down stairs already got through 4 tennis balls this week by him biting through them. I'm after something that isn't too hard on his teeth, that will bounce but big enough that he won't swallow.

Any advice welcomed.

One of these should last longer than a tennis ball:

Are they proper tennis balls? The 'dog toy' balls are rubbish, much better to get proper sport tennis balls if you aren't already!

Try one of those mini footballs, (bit bigger than a tennis ball), probably last a bit longer than a tennis ball.

My JRT can destroy a tennis ball in under 5 minutes! Shocked

She has a rubber toy now, it's a cone made from three, gradually smaller, doughnut shapes, (3 in. long by 1.5 in, you can get bigger), it's lasted way longer than any toy she's ever had. I think she likes it because it has an unpredictable bounce! Laughing

Also when he goes for the tennis ball, ask him to return the ball to you... give him a treat as a reward.
If i leave tess alone with a tennis ball she'll demolish it minutes due to boredom, thats why i only try to use them only for training or a quick play down the park..

Since we're photo whoring our dog's catching abilities, I give you dog vs snow ball:

Although obviously you might struggle with supply this time of year. The solid rubber balls you get from pretty much any pet shop are fairly indestructible, yet have enough give to be kind to the dogs teeth and they're fairly cheap too... These ones:

Our two JRT's were a real handful until they got their first Kong. As Sid says the unpredictable bounce keeps them interested and they are too tough to destroy.
One serious drawback is that they don't float, but can be stuffed with polystyrene for the beach/river.
Nothing knackers them so completely unless it has fur and a good turn of speed.
They are just obsessed with it.
Having said that we have maybe bought 50 in the last three years at nearly 7 quid a go. Sometimes they just run off and loose them, usually when some real prey item comes on the scene.

It makes them so happy I think it's worth it.

Original shape kongs are good because they bounce quite randomly, which can help keep the dog 'interested'.

However just a solid rubber ball should do the trick - my dog will kill a tennis ball in twenty minutes, but hasn't done anything significant to the solid rubber ball yet.

Another vote for Kong toys here too..

We have a border collie, and a black lab at the moment. Had a GSD before that, and all three of them failed to make any serious damage any of the kong toys to date.

When we've had tennis balls in the past, we've had to replace them on a regular, almost daily basis

Didn't think we still had that. Laughing

+1 for Kongs. Our lab x bassett hound will destroy anything but it's taken him over a year to damage his first kong.

They've got a good bit of give in them as well so his teeth should be fine.

These balls are expensive but very durable. I've got two Staffies who destroy tennis balls in minutes. These balls have lasted 2 years at least.

They have small holes in so will collapse but regain their shape. They also float.

Two 18kg Staffies play tug with one of these and they still don't break.

As long as they don't get lost, they are 100% worth the cost.

My concern with finding something more robust or indestrucaball *actual product, they do exist) is that dog's chew to relieve stress. Everyone has heard a tale about a dog left alone chewing a chair or the door frame. If you remove your dogs avenue for expressing what is a natural behaviour you may well have an unhappy dog that then seeks another avenue to destress.

Also if you've seen a recent increase in this ball killing behaviour it could be a symptom of an underlying illness and an early warning.

My 12 year old GSD x Spaniel will munch through a raw rack of mini cow ribs in 20minutes. So perhaps try giving her some different things to kill.

As mentioned above, original Kongs are good, get a Large or XL for a Collie sized dog in the original Red, if she kills it quickly go for the black kong which is designed for power chewers.

Kong also do balls made from the same rubber and lots of other variations now too.
the kong Air range arn't as robust as a 'propper' tennis ball.

Dogs 'kill' toys and chew to relieve stress, so perhaps offering her more appropriate things to chew (like a kong stuffed with food) rather than a tennis ball will help her express a natural behaviour.

Anyone else read the thread title and assume it was going to be seeking advice on a dogs testicles?
