Finally passed my das the hard part is done so now the fun begins! . sooooo happy i got it out the way and done and dusted Very Happy

Going to spend a max 2k on a bike so have lots to pick from i likey the zx6r, sv650, firestorm, vfr lots and lots really. They all cost roughly about the same insurance wise except the sv650 which is ALOT cheaper however while i can afford the extra monies for the insurance I am trying to justify the extra, are the other 3 twice as good as the sv650 i wonder.

anyways i passed yay

Congratulations on your pass! It'll be the "style" of the bike that makes or breaks the insurance I found. Bandits were cheap options (insurance wise) ZX-Rs were more expensive (super sports) but then I found ZZ-Rs are sports tourers so slightly more than the bandit but a lot less than the ZX-R etc

would you say the zzr would be better (more fun ect) than the sv650? i quite like the pointy one. For some reason the bandit and hornet is nearly as much to insure as the zx6r. and for some reason a R6 is 1800 a year....third party Shocked

Grats on passing!

Just remember to keep a level head! It's very exciting when you have the prospect of a new bike in front of you! But just because you can LEGALLY ride anything you want, doesn't necessary mean you HAVE to jump on the biggest, most powerful bike you can find Very Happy

Don't plunge headlong onto the first bike that catches you eye, take your time and sit on everything you can find until you find that one that really works for you!

Grats again! You've got a lot of fun ahead of you!

Thumbs Up

Well done. Now comes the really fun part of finding your bike and starting to really learn. Stay calm, don't rush things and give yourself a chance to enjoy the hell out of whatever you get. I'll chuck my two-pence worth in for a 650 Versys. I love mine to bits and want to see lots more of them on the road!
Congrats again!

What sort of bike do you want? I settled on my Hornet after trying and/or sitting on about 20 bikes, from 400 sports bikes to 500 commuters and 600 nakeds - I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for quite a number of reasons.

Well I like all sorts really my mates are going ahhhh get a sports bike it only goes as fast as u want but thinking bit more along the lines of a vfr 800 or firestorm or thunder ace. Maybe I'm thinking to big.

If I was going to get a sport bike I'd get something like a thundercat cos the cheap and won't hurt to much if I drop it not that I intend to Very Happy for some reason a bandit or Hornet is 200 quid less to insure than a zx6r. Now I'm thinking ah sod it il pay the extra for the sporty sexy one but I'm in no rush to get a bike. I have a hairdryer of a car(1.2 corsa hehe)

Look at an old Fazer.Fair enough i'm maybe a little older than you.
But I passed my test in March,so got an old xj600(I hated it)but all I had to pay was an admin charge to change from my old CG125.Within 3 weeks I changed it to a 1998 Fazer, and again just had an admin fee to pay.
Lovely bike the Fazer.Looks a biggish bike until you sit on it and then for some reason you just mould into it,and it feels like it's half the size.

If you're in no rush I'd try as many as possible. After driving a hairdryer the first time you open up a 600 sportsbike in first or second you will probably shit yourself without much prior experience!

Theres plenty of reasons to get one, I've just got one myself. 600 supersports handle like they're on rails, look great and go very fast. Having said that, the riding position isn't really conducive to learning to ride a big bike; head down, arse up and weight on the wrists position limits your visibility and makes for a slightly more stressful experience than a naked. They also aren't as comfortable or anywhere near as forgiving. The throttle is also more sensitive and power delivery much harsher and a jerky newbie right hand could get you into an awful lot of trouble.

Having binned my Hornet more than once in the early days, including a serious and quite fast trackday lowside, I have to say GO NAKED. Less expensive stuff to replace, parts more readily available and so on. My take on my 'first bike research' from a couple of years ago - SV650s are made of cheese but apparently 'fun'. I don't see it myself. Fazers are good with excellent brakes for the money but Fugly. Bandits are lardy and everywhere, XJ600s are boring and Hornets are fun with a good engine but have terrible tank range.

If you must go for the sexy, faired stuff go for a 'softer' CBR600F or lardy Thundercat

A Fazer fugly?
I suppose it's horses for courses, the main thing that made me want to test ride my Fazer was it's looks. Very Happy

Ah I gotta say that is fugly, little beady eyes lol but each to there own.

Iv noticed some 1000 are cheaper to insure than 600s I'm kinda thinking maybe I should just get one of those, firestorm, thunder ace both cheaper for me to insure than a 01 zx6r. The cheapest so far is a sv650 but few people have said there shite.

So frustrating all these different bikes to pick from but exciting at the same time Very Happy

Get yourself test riding a few.Don't rush in like I did.
I regretted my XJ600 within a day of getting it.I know looks are important image wise,But get what you feel the most comfortable on.
I'm 45 so image doesn't matter to me.But the handling of a Fazer and the acceleration to me is fantastic.

I find this strange, as one of the things I really like about the divvys are they have very neutral predictable handling, and adequate power with a comfy seating position. Coupled with the price, I'd say they are a very good starter bike. For example I found the earlier hornets to be a bit funny handling, and the fazer to be underwhelming and a little uncomfortable, as well as the triangle nose being ugly. Compared to a divvy it might have been a bit faster, but overall relatively slow in acceleration terms. IIRC the one I rode didn't have a particularly revvy top end, and it didn't feel anything like the r6 it's derived from.

Everyone has different opinions though, I chose to get yet another rf600 over much newer bikes based on comfort, and mid level speed. The price helps a lot as I'm not one to spend a lot on vehicles (I could afford and test rode an 848 for example, it was wonderful but I couldn't see myself using that much more of it than I would with an old spaceship)

To the OP, anything you get now will feel like a rocket compared to a 125 or a 500 commuter. I would check out the fz1s, they are fairly quick but are pretty forgiving, also semi naked as said is better for the inevitable drop at standstill or lowside on some wet leaves your first winter.
