Ok I'm currently sat in a service station on the iPhone! Stopped for 5 minutes for a drink and a breather, start the bike up again, and every time I kick it into gear the bike immediately stalls, if I rev the bike and try it just sounds like its chewing up the gear box and won't go in. So, firstly what's wrong, and secondly, does that mean te bike is going home on the back of a flatbed tonight? Urgency needed please! Thanks!

Location?

And it sounds like your clutch cable has snapped, assuming you have a clutch cable or course.

The first bit sounds like it could be a problem with sidestand switch or something. Some bikes will cut out if you put it in gear with the stand down. Not saying yours is down but the switch might be saying that....

Alternatively your clutch is not disengaging (snapped cable most likely culprit). Put it in gear and try and wheel it with the clutch pulled in.

how peculiar, out of interest does the bike rock back and forth in gear?

Personally sounds like side stand switch has died, bike thinks the sidestand is down

no idea though, what bike?

you in the AA or RAC ?

Sounds like the guys comments above have given you some idea of what it could be. Can you see the clutch cable, to check if it's snapped? Also see if the side stand switch is sticking, by operating it a few times. Let us know how you get on. You're too far away for me.

What bike is it?

It sounds like a problem with the clutch release mechanism. Is it cable or hydraulic?

Ok managed to get it going in the end, rode it straight home immediately once it was working (just got home). I put the kickstand up and down a few times and pumped the clutch a fair bit and it eventually jumped into gear but quite violently and lurched forward, had a similar problem yesterday but fortunately it went into gear on 3rd attempt then. My guess is something wrong with the clutch, wearing Out or something. I'm getting it serviced soon so will get them to check it then. Cheers for the help guys!

Cable clutch. Find the adjuster on the engine and adjust the pushrod, then set the free-play on the cable.
