Currently rebuilding my CB750 engine, this is what's left of the big end bearings (GL1100 bearing added as a reference).

Looks like the last person to do this put the wrong sized bearings in. Rolling Eyes

Would not have lasted long if they did. Looks like plain and simple wear to me, with a touch of oilchange neglect thrown in for good measure.

I can't believe this is just wear and tear. The 'good' bearing came from a 40k engine....so did the bad ones.

I suspect these bearings have less than 2k miles on them. The guy I bought the bike from mentioned having the engine apart and judging by the other bodges I've found he was clueless.

lol this could spiral into a million questions which would leave with a very intimate knowledge of engines as i have no idea what a power band is or what that does and how it in turn affects those metal things lol

Those are the bearings that the crankshaft rides on. The crankshaft is the shaft that the pistons connect to at the bottom end of the engine. The shaft, besides being connected to the bottom of the pistons, is connected to the clutch at one end.

The bearings you see assist it turning in the engine casing. They shouldn't look like the OP's picture though!

Im a nurse and whenever we get a new student nurse or doctor on the ward we start by asking them to fetch a fallopian tube from the equipment cupboard. They fall for it every time. Im afraid you just fell for a similar joke.

How stupid are they? Everyone knows that fallopian tube comes on a roll, you just cut off the amount you need.

You are describing main bearing shells, that stay in the engine block and that the crank rotates in. Big ends such as those shown above are at the big (crank) end of the conrod, and are the point at which the bottom of the conrod revolves around the crank Thumbs Up

You should see the subframe! And the chains a bit loose, not sure which chain though.

Both bottom and top are the same. No.3 & 4 are a little worse but there is no difference between top and bottom.

I've been looking at them a bit more closely. It looks like a couple of the bearings have spun in the rod at least a few times.
So the story looks to be something like wrong sized bearings moving in the rod blocking the oil way leading to massively increased wear.

This is not how I expect bearings to sit in the rod:

Only takes a short while with a lack of oil to do this, think how much friction is created in there when that crank's lobbing round at red line revs, once that crank grips them 'cos she's dry they'll just spin.
Are the faces good? I've recently done a 'Blade that looked a lot worse and ended up throwing away the crank - got any friendly old timer engineers nearby who'd make sure it's still true, always best to check for the cost of a couple of pints!
