I was riding along the A46 today between Lincoln and Newark. For those that don't know it is dual carriageway.
I was coming up to the Swinderby roundabout heading towards Newark.
There was a bike struggling along at 45mph into a head wind, with cars wizzing passed him/her.It was about a mile before the roundabout and I deliberately slowed down sat 2 seconds behind and held the lane by being roughly 3/4 over in the lane so no car could threaten the bike in front.
Once round the roundabout I checked my right shoulder and shot off raising my left hand to give them a wave as I went past.
Now should I have just over took before the roundabout and left them to their own riding or did I do a good thing?

I can remember my old CG not being able to get above 45mph into a head wind.Maybe it was just my memory of that that made me do it.

Yeah you done good. Smile

Used to be a great relief to me when I was pootling along redlining the H100 and the OH was behind me stopping the cars from getting too close. It's something I have done myself once or twice over the years.

Secretreeve, what an odd thing to say. Confused

I'm not saying that I think that you did right or wrong but your post makes me mindful of the kids/wives that tootal along on push bikes, travelling at approx 3 feet per hour, holding up other road users whilst being protected by their fathers/husbands. They are a nuisance to most other road users and should probably be restricted to travelling on pavements.

The problem is mate it was a 125.I think it was a chinky brand but,to my mind he was doing it legally.Cars were taking the piss and going very close to the bike to overtake.
I don't know why.But with me covering his/her arse they took a wider line around the bike.

I think you done a good deed.

I remember riding home in the rain with a headwind on my 125. On the way back there's a gradient on the dual carriageway and sometimes the bike would struggle to hold more than 45mph. Having another rider there to give you more presence would have been great.

Many a time the cars would overtake far too close. I used to wish to be stuck behind a lorry as they took the headwind off and stopped the nutters overtaking too close. Sadly the lorries used to be able to pull away from me though!

Did the rider in front have L plates and appear to need any kind of help or assistance?

If that had been me, on a 125 in a headwind, having some well-meaning twonk ticking along just behind me in a lane would have made me want to get off and deck the cunt.

nothing wrong with looking out for other bikers, I sat in my car behind a bike who was using his feet as skis in heavy snow on the A90 up here in the north east of Scotland, I was worried that as we were coming to a roundabout during rush hour a car might not have been able to brake in time behind him, the weather was horrendous.

I'd have overtook him leaving him with inchs of room at roughly 140mph giving him a nice vortex of wind tunnel to deal with aswell as arsehole drivers Smile

You did a good thing imo. Thumbs Up

Also good work. Thumbs Up Smile

Sometimes it's better to just stay out of people's way but there are times when you can see exactly what is wrong and those are the times to make yourself useful.

If that was me on the 125 (well it could well be me as I have a 125) I would have appreciated some help.

Doing 45mph, into a headwind on a 125 has nothing to do with ability, just the laws of physics. Rolling Eyes

And it is no bad thing that one biker helps another.

To those that wouldn't of helped Middle Finger

This biker brotherhood thing is stupid.

One person who may or may not actually care about motorcycles as much as I do or do not is riding their motorcycle on a road at the same time as me.

They are not old/rich/ballsy enough to have a big enough bike to ride at proper speeds so I will ride behind them and protect them from the big bad cagers?

Nah mate.

Yeah, but in the olden days it prolly didn't used to be like that Laughing

I'd stop, if I thought someone needed help.
I have in the past, and I still would now (even though I could probably be of little practical use).
But then again, I occasionally haven't.

But my point was that the OP didn't actually ask "Do you need help?" - he presumed the other biker required his assistance, and did what he believes is a nice gesture.

Ain't nothing wrong with nice gestures, I'm a major fan of them myself.

But in some situations I'd get annoyed with a well-meaning gesture, and probably cop the hump. Especially if the person offering assistance hasn't actually asked do I need help and received an answer in the affirmative.

But then I've always been a grumpy old cow Laughing
