No more loosening the axle to set the chain tension, cleaning the chain, re-oiling the chain, wiping off splattered chain oil off the back wheel.
Oh the joys of shaft drive!
Filled the final gear with some fresh oil, took all of 10 minutes, now i dont need to touch it for at least 6 months, bliss Very Happy

Probably longer, if it's anything like my GS. That was every 16K miles, IIRC. Might even be more than that, but I'd have to check.

Awesome, to be honest when i changed it today it didnt look too bad anyway, a bit 'tinted' looking, but far from black

Well, I wouldn't take that as too much of an indication; the oil that I drained from the GS was knocking on for thirty years old, and was still fairly clear. Having said that, it's still pretty low mileage, and I haven't gotten it to a stage where it's on the road, yet.

Drive shaft splines still require maintenance and cleaning to prevent excessive wear; costs of replacement drive parts can be hideously expensive.

By keeping the chain in good nick it means it doesn't require frequent tightening.

My chains has a scottoiler and over 30k on it in, I have NEVER adjusted it as a routine task, I just do it every time I have the wheel off which isn't that often! it will easily go 5k miles without me even looking at it. Same as the scot oiler they reckon the reservoir has 500 mile range, mine is turned right down and with the lube tube easily does 8k miles before being empty. I still have 4 bars or adjustment left on the swingarm.

The bike has a shaft fitted, and once the overweight 'new for 2012 - get the adventure look' adventure clothing wearing rider climbs on board, some voodoo happens and power goes to the rear wheel and everything.

2 sets of bevel gears and a driveshaft, enclosed in oil, rather than a chain.

You shouldn't really expect the oil to look dirty, it's not getting the mucky effluvium of your suck-squeeze-bang-blow cycle spurted into it past the ring protection. However, it may have lost its lubricating properties, leading to dry grinding and shaft chafe.

It is for a bicycle but the concept is identical. Inside the shaft housing it is full of lubricating oil to prevent wear. The oil requires periodic replacement.

I love the anti cruiser atmosphere in this forum.
And fair enough, ill do it probably 6 monthly or every year

They need packing with Moly grease. That's about it.
