The little scooter I bought as a runaround is being an annoying little fecker.

I've got a charging problem, but can't for the life of me think what's wrong.

My stator works, i think it reads 0.02 oms between each of the 3 wires.
throws out 29v at idle, the regulator rectifier puts out 13.7
at idle, at the battery terminals its 13.5 at idle, so I presume its all working
correctly, but the battery keeps discharging.

Anybody got an idea what the problem could be?

Simple answer would be the battery is fucked. One or more cells and its not holding charge.

Battery fooked.
You can test it by measuring the voltage across the posts then if you can put it in gear and engage the starter the voltage should only drop a couple of volts but then hold.
If the battery is goosed the voltage will drop rapidly.

Doh.. the battery Embarassed

Didn't think of that, the guy I got it off said it hadn't long been
replaced, might have been lying, or could just be a dud battery.

I'll buy a new one tomorrow, see if that helps.

You can do a simple test.

Charge battery.
Tale the caps off the top of battery, make sure there is electrolyte/acid covering the cells and charge it.

Once charged, disconnect the small wires from ignition coil (LT wires) and while looking at the battery try to start the bike, obviously it won't start but it'll be loading the battery, if it has dead cells they will overheat and bubble, obviously more than the others.

If it does this you definitely have a duff battery, if it doesn't it could still be battery fault but need testing other ways.

Could be an answer and maybe save buying a battery without need.

Did you not test the battery first? Shocked

Battery charging is tested with the engine OFF idle ie more than 2000RPM

At idle the output of some charging systems is low.

You can also look for something drawing power from the battery with everything switched off (including the engine).

Disconnect the battery lead from one post.
Measure the battery voltage.
Connect the lead and see if voltage drops.
You could measure current AMPS if you have a big enough ammeter but not many folk have a ammeter that can handle the full flow from a battery.

well it turns out it was a faulty reg / rec.

very strange as I thought they either worked or didn't work, any reason why it should have the correct output at idle but drop off when revving?

Going up through the revs the output of the reg / rec was dropping off so wasn't charging the battery.

£15 used part from ebay sorted it out.

The old battery is also holding a charge and charging up now Laughing
ah well, have a spare battery Rolling Eyes
