Some nice person has just offered me their bike, free of charge as its sitting in their garage doing nothing Mr. Green

Ideally I'd track it...but I'd like a road bike for the summer.

Its got 44k on clocks but had a 16k engine popped in 2 years ago and has covered 450 miles in that time.

It has 12 months MOT and 1 month tax...so its a fairly ok condition bike.

I've not really had a 400 before, the one I borrowed was shereens VFR and that was awesome, handled superb! But is the FZR that good of a bike?

Looking at reviews they are ~60hp, rev to about 14k and pretty reliable...but a personal insight would be nice!

Well how good does it need to be to be good value at £0?

I think they look absolutely gorgeous but I preferred my CBR400RR to ride. Nearly bought one with an FZR600 engine recently...

I've had my 3tj for over 6 years now, haven't had any reliability problems, other then the rec/reg dying and taking out the battery.
I'm not sure what info you are really after but they are typical 400cc sportsbikes. small, uncomfortable, revvy and quite good fun. The engine is a bit electric sounding, although it makes a nice high pitch scream when you have it pinned on track.
Not an ideal track bike as they are probably more like 50-55hp which is probably half the power of most other bikes you'll come across on track, it doesn't take away from the fun but can be a little frustrating if you get stuck behind somebody a tiny bit slower then yourself as they keep coming back past you on the straights Razz
I've done over 10 trackdays on mine, toured around Europe and used it to commute. Great little bike really.
I'll have it if it's free, I need some spare bits Mr. Green
Should probably mention that I'm only 5'5 and 9.5st so this may be why the suspension and size works for me.

Fucking hell that looks tiny Laughing

I'm 5' 11 ish...but loved the VFR400 size wise.

I'm not knocking it till I've tried it, but it was more are there any bad issues like things corroding faster than most, what tends to fail quickly etc.

Any idea on mpg?

That photo in the sun on the beach... love it, where was that Thumbs Up

I''ve only sat on an nc30 but it felt the same size.

The down pipes rot and the exup valves seize up but there are normally 2nd hand ones available on ebay for fairly cheap and if the bikes free.

I think I get about 50-55mpg on normal road riding.
The photo is taken in Cannes Thumbs Up

Nice picture, tried to look at album but its passworded Laughing

Hopefully its all ok and needs minimal work Praying

I don't know loads about the EXUP valve as I removed mine when my exhaust cracked and replaced it with a non exup valve s/s system.
You lose a little low and mid range power without the valve but it seems to rev a bit cleaner at higher revs.
It's just a little servo motor that moves some cables to open and close a flap in the exhaust, I think it starts to open at about 7000rpm and you could feel a slight change in acceleration, not a 'yo v-tec just kicked in' change Smile just a small one.
The suspension will more then likely be knackered like most 400's. A common mod is to fit the 06-07 R6 rear shock which is a little shorter then the FZR one, you can buy/make an adapter to make it fit. I don't think there is any straight swap for the front end though, as most people just rebuilt the originals with stiffer springs and thicker oil.

The photobucket photos you were trying to access are in here Thumbs Up

Great bikes the 3tj..

so much so i'm shifting my fz750 to grab one yet again for the road b road blasts..

Had quite a few and says somthing that i keep going back to them as road bikes as so much fun ..

I also have a full blown 74bhp kitted race bike and one on the bench at the mo with thundercat engine being installed Mr. Green ..

Once the fz's gone i will have 3 lol..

std exhaust's rot and just make sure if you unplug or run without the exup connected you get the cdi de-restricted as this takes out the error safe mode etc..

use good oil...service properly...maintain brakes...loadsa miles with smiles. Thumbs Up

I've got one as a track bike. Its very very very good. Its up there with the best bikes I've ridden on track. A mite underpowered perhaps, but for technical circuits it is an absolute dream.

It takes the same size tyres as an SV650 so minitwin race scrubs fit well.

The EXUP valve bushes are expensive, and parts can be a pain. Getting an air filter for a 1989 3TJ is very difficult and I had to pay a lot of money for one.

However, they are really really good bikes, and as long as you get one in good nick will make an excellent trackbike and reasonable toy roadbike. I wouldn't want to use one as my daily as its so uncomfortable.

Hmm technical circuits, currently my only locals are Brands and Lydden, I'll obviously be happy to travel if its a good bike and lasts.

Its a 1992, I think. Its an old workmates...he owes me a few little favours so wiping clean with this Mr. Green

They really that uncomfortable? I suppose about 30 mins in the seat racing won't be too bad though? If I was to say get an exhaust system minus the EXUP, would solve the issue but would I lose "track usable" power at the same time?

Will be going to look at it tomorrow Thumbs Up

If the EXUP works, keep it.

The 1992 has adjustable forks and is easier to get filters for etc.

Damn you!

Laughing I'm still sceptical as its a 400 IL4, the last one I rode was a CB400SF and from memory it was a nice ride, smooth and had some power in the mid range but wasn't ballistic.

Damn me Laughing

When you get rid of it, give me a pm! Really like these bikes, and I can use my girlfriend who will hopefully be doing her test soon as an excuse to buy one. Razz
