I've bought 3 disc locks in my time. The first fell apart a few months after getting it, the second was an alarmed model which malfunctioned about 3 days after it arrived, and the alarm on my latest one is also now acting up.

Then there is the recent thread by the guy who had his bike nicked after the thieves defeated his disk lock by tapping it with a hammer.

Apparently certain models of Kryptonite disk lock can be picked with a Bic pen.

And Xena disk locks have been known to do this:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=234732

Does anyone know of a brand of disc lock that actually does what it's supposed to do? I'm at the point where I don't really care how much it costs, I just want one that isn't a shoddily built piece of crap.

I think the idea of a disc lock is more a deterrent. The brighter, bigger and yellower ones are best!

If not, put an Oxford HD mini shackle lock through the front disc again, with a bright yellow reminder.

Kryptonite disk locks used to be openable with a bic pen back in 2000 when they used 16 pin barrel locks. As far as I know they now use much much more complex barrel locks which are a lot harder to pick.

if you get a beefy Xena disk lock with the double or quad locking feature, the problem in the show thread cant happen, as the bolt locks back into the body.

I have one, and it is a hefty beast! Cant be forced open with a scewdriver or similar, think it has a 16mm double locking pin Very Happy

Thanks, just had a look on their website and they do some interesting-looking items.

The "New York 14P Disc Lock" has got their highest rating, yet judging by the dimensions will easily fit into a pocket. Thinking

I have a Krall KHS916 (amongst others) which to my knowledge hasn't had to resist a theft attempt yet (knock on wood) but has been used as a link in a chain to lift a tree-stump out of a hole. A tree-stump which probably weighs more than I do. Not sure what that says about the quality but it feels solid enough.

I've been using the Abus Granite one for years no problems so far...

..this. Bit on the expensive side (may get cheaper) but I suspect you get what you pay for.

I should say that I'm most interested in one that would easily fit into a jacket pocket.

I had a Dr. Bike one ... no-one even had to try breaking it, it literally fell apart of its own accord.

As an alternative, have you considered a Grip Lock?

That's not a recommendation, but 1) you can't forget that it's there and 2) it might puzzle the scrotes a bit. I hear they're a cowardly, superstitious lot.

wouldn't you just cut the brake line and it would release it?

I use an Oxford Boss disc lock, not had any problems yet. Comes with a handy holder which you can fit to your bike too.

grip locks are supposed to prevent you from using the throttle as well as the front brake

I've had one of the oxford disc locks for the past year and a bit. Two days ago it just decided to stop locking completely. Annoyed about it, but will probably get the same one as has been absolutely fine and obviously not stolen.

Comes a point with disc locks where it's quicker and easier to smash the brake disc to remove the lock, and apparently that's not too hard to do...

...so, so long as (unlike some mentioned here!) the lock doesn't fall apart on its own, ANY disc lock is just a deterrent to the casual thief and the weak point will always be the disc itself.

I quite like the look of the grip lock - also no more than a deterrent as normal service is resumed once the lever is broken/sawn - but might not involve quite so much brake dust on my hands Wink

Also, I like lots of different/simple/cheap security on my bike rather than one expensive thing - so a cable/chain lock on the rear, a disc lock on the front and one of those grip locks would probably put off all but the most determined thief... too much time and effort and might not know how to defeat all of them... whereas if they know how to get past one single expensive lock, it's worthless.

Yup good lock and easily fits in your pocket if you have nowhere else to put it. Mine fits nicely under the bike seat. Mine cost £29 at a local retailer
