Oh, woe is you. Don't want to buy a 125, don't want to pay for training, it's soooo unfair.
How about you take a big gulp of MTFU and just make a decision? You already have all the facts, the only thing that's stopping you is you. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Cut the shit, I live in Berkshire too and I bought a 125 for £740. That was last summer so you should be able to get one for that price now too. Like roger said, MTFU and do it! ____________________

^ This +1
Choices;
1) Buy a 2nd hand 125 for around £600 to £800, run it for a few motnhs and get some road practice in, then take your MODs on that £90.50. Then you can either carry on using it, or pretty much swap it for a bigger bike and restrict if necessary
2) Spend £600 to £800 on a DAS course on a bigger bike, then spend another £600 to £xxxx on a bigger bike
Option 1 is cheaper, and you learn a hell of a lot more running round on a 125 for a few month than jumping straight onto a bigger bike that's a lot more forgiving of mistakes that you probably won't be aware of, until it's too late.
Just my two penneth worth. It's your choice, just bloody make it and get on with it ____________________ Honda Goldwing GL 1000 Current love

You'll soon find that once you've climbed on whatever you buy (another vote for the 125 route btw) and bimbled off down the road, the cost will be quickly forgotten. |
how someone can think of getting a bike and get a CBT done and not end up buying something to go around on is beyond me. christ, most have a bike before a CBT is booked, or pick one up that week.
Buy the 125 and enjoy it, you will more than likely be able to sell it on for what you paid, the value in the experience on the 125 more than outweighs the loss you may make on it.
whats the rush to get a 'big bike'? a 125 is a great place to start, going for a full licence and getting a 'big bike' without any experience on a smaller bike is IMO foolish. work your way up from the bottom, go around on a 125 for a bit, do your licence cheaply for the £90, sell the 125, buy something a little bigger, ride out the restriction and gain the experience before buying a crotch rocket.
IMO a DAS course is just a waste of money, its just pissing £500+ quid up against the wall to get something that you cant even use to its full potential, there's plenty of choice of bikes out there that you can have on a restricted licence. ____________________ ......................................................................... |

Hi New001, I can see the dilemma you've got. To be honest I think you'd e better off going the route of a 125, build experience being one reason. The other to see if you actually 'take' to biking, you mention the decision is based of cheaper transport. I did my CBT last July, brought a POS GN125 for sub £400. I ridden that bike in all weathers throughout rain, cold, snow, ice & the odd occassion when it's warm . I know that I'm happy to ride in all weathers despite driving from 1997 to 2011 (sold my car after I'd done my CBT). What I'm getting at is try it out first, if you opted for the DAS & spent £700 odd, then more money on a big bike, insurance, gear etc & then decided you didn't like the cold or wet. You've laid out alot of cash and then have to try and recoup the cost of the bike and gear (insurance money will be long gone).
If you pick up a 125 & decide it isn't for you then it's cost you a CBT and you should see your money back on the 125.
I've learnt alot riding the GN, builds confidence, awareness & all the other stuff that's important.
I'll be going in for my DAS within the next month or so as I feel confident to step up and learn a bit more and have options with bikes. The GN is slow & tempremental but for sub £400 it's provided alot of valuable experience.
I don't think I'd pay out for a DAS course without doing a winter on a bike and knowing I was happy to do so. ____________________ CBT: Pass 25/06/2011 Theory Test: Pass12/06/2012 Mod 1: Fail 08/07/2012

Nope, and rarely.
He knows the score, he's just having a moan because there's no quick, cheap route to a license. Well, there isn't, so pick one of the other routes and get on with it.

Indeed, and it's a perfectly viable route, but you have to actually do it. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
