Greetings Gentlemen

I am sure that my Jack Russell, Tommy, would like to come out on the bike. But it has to be done safely for us both. Does anyone know of a a suitable product I could fit to the rack which is already there for a back box? Bike is a CB250 Nighthhawk.

The only thing I can find on the internet looks like a Gladstone bag with an open flap at one end for the dogs head. Doesnt look that brilliant to me.

Try to keep the suggestions serious please !!!!

Thanks

Ron

If I decided to take mine, I'd be thinking some kind of modified tank bag, with an harness built into it.

IIRC Bagster do/did a dog carrier.
Bagster will not be the cheapest solution as you need the tank cover for the bike first.
However, can be cost effective as can clip other tank bag, map case (do people still use them with GPS available?), etc.

Did a google and found this...

click image for further info (might be able to buy cheaper elsewhere).

What about taking a cheapish topbox, removing the lid or a portion of it, and finding a way to securely attach a dog harness to it?

Assuming it's a small dog, behind seems a better place for the mutt to me. You may want some doggles or craft a small perspex wind-shield on for him too.

Envisaging along these lines: https://scootercommunity.com.au/forums/storage/5/58097/229.jpg

Personally, I don't think its particularly safe or fair to the animal. What if it gets spooked by something and starts thrashing its body around in the box? That's going to be interesting at low speeds. Another thing to remember is that you cant have their heads sticking out as above for the same reason that dogs aren't supposed to put their heads out of car windows, it can damage their eyes:

Quote:
With your dog's head out the window, its eyes are exposed to dust, dirt, rocks and anything else that gets kicked up by your car and others on the road. Allowing your dog to stick its head out of the window while you drive leaves your dog's eyes exposed to possible scratches or punctures.
Even if you've gone so far as to purchase goggles for your dog and spent weeks training it not to slide them off with its paw, there are still other dangers that remain when your dog's head is out the window during driving. The soft ear flaps -- called pinnae -- can swell and become tender from flapping in the wind [source: PFD]. The repeated and rapid flapping of the pinnae against your dog's skull from high-speed winds actually causes trauma to the ear; blood pools in the ear flaps, which can cause painful swelling. After repeated trauma, the soft tissue in the ears can scar, causing lifelong problems for your pooch.

(Source: https://animals.howstuffworks.com/pets/pet-travel/let-dog-stick-head-out-window1.htm)

Furthermore have you considered what would happen if you came off? Especially with the dogs head sticking out the result could be very nasty. Even if the dog is encased in a box it would still be a horrible and possibly physically damaging experience for the dog.

So in summary, even if you can legally I don't think its a particularly good idea.

Personally I would say, box or don't bother.

A dog sitting on the back of the bike like a pillion, fine. I've seen dogs sitting in the footwell of scooters, they seem to understand that jumping off would be a bad idea.

Sitting in a box like the above that provides some reasonable protection, sure.

A dog sitting in a tank bag strapped into a harness? If you take a slide, the dog will almost certainly die after sliding along the road attached to a hunk of metal.

My biggest concern was what would happen if the bike went over. That carrier isn't designed for this, to say the least, and wouldn't be much protection.

However, neither do the made for purpose tank bags at £120. I'm travelling at 25mph (30 downhill!), and take extra care with her in the back. It's all a judgement call.

She likes it, she'll jump up and fit herself in there.

I'm trying to get her riding on the pillion now. Just for giggles when suitable.

I would love to be able to load my staffie onto some contraption over the back seat of my ninja and take him out into the country for a walk. Being 25+kilos though he aint a little dog so theres nothing out there for him which sucks.

How about modifying one of those french child seats for motorbikes, the ones like a roll cage/cocoon (for smaller dogs ofc)
