Just been on a round trip to Blackpool and back (from Portsmouth)
It was a very last minute decision to go on the bike and the only thing I checked was that I had my wallet and breakdown cover's phone number
My Scottoiler needs topping up every 1000 miles ish and I use the second odometer as a reminder (when its getting close eg 900 miles - top it up and reset odometer to zero)
I set off from home without even looking at the odo or checking the levels or even giving it a second thought that I would be doing close to 600 miles
I hammered it to B'pool and a glance down showed it just tick over to 1003 miles and I wasn't there yet...Ooopsie I think - not brought the filler tube nor the chainsaw oil I have been using
Got to the destination - its dark chain seems fine - not got any slacker and still has a coating of oil (so its possibly not gone that far without oil being dispensed)
In the morning sure enough the oiler reservoir is bone dry and so is the feed line
I bought a small bottle of 10/40 and managed to blag an empty washing up bottle and managed to part fill the oiler (certainly enough to get myself around and back home)
Getting it to flow back down the line and to the chain is drama free and took 2 mins
I vaguely recall someone doing similar and using the extra bottle as a touring add on to get more than 1000 miles between top ups
If you are wanting simplicity to the point you only want to do something once circa every 1000 miles - get a scottoiler
Just remember to keep it filled up (or ghetto a touring add on bottle for peace of mind)
Place it so its levels are visible or remember to set an odometer to show when it needs checking (and think ahead unlike this muppet)
Regards

I lubed my chain in Plymouth, then went to Dover, France, Belgium, Germany, Holland and back again. About 2000 miles, no lube, no problems. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. The reasons outlined in that site are the very reason I'm not fussed about oiling my chain so much.
The only thing I see it helping with is the friction between the chain and sprockets. ____________________ I am a bellend, I am a man of constant sorrow, I am a gummy bear, I am a rock. |

Ref chain lub.
I've run out on a trip once or twice. Good tip is a can of three in one oil. Can buy it in most garage's, dead cheap. Will get you out of a fix and the nozzle will fit a Scot oiler.

Rob - a quick point - rather than fannying around with washing up liquid bottles and engine oil, why didn't you just grab some 3in1 oil or even chain wax and just spray it straight onto the chain? Would have done you fine for the 600 miles back from Blackpool. ____________________

stop being so anal about it
Just because the scotoiler stop dispensing a few miles ago it doesn't mean the chain is suddenly going to snap. you could easily do another 1000 miles with nothing in the scotoiler and it'd be fine. |
