Evening all!

My tyres are getting close to needing replacing, and I'm after some advice.

In the past I've just put the cheapest ones on (£30 a corner), on a Punto.

Changed my ways now, and looking for something decent, but not going to kill my bank balance (£100 a corner ideally).

I've got a BMW 528i, and the tyre size is 225/55/R16, speed rating is V.

Anyone have any advice on what ones are worth getting?

Depends what you want out of the tyres really.

225/55-16 is a poular size, so getting good tyres for <£100 a corner will be easy, especially if you are buying 4 from a tyre shop, you'll get a good deal.

Currently got Yokohama S-drives on the Clio. A little more suited to all weather compared to the Pradas (Which I initially wanted), but do stick to the road like shit to a blanket in the dry.

Will get them for <£100 each.

Falken FK 452s if you can atill get them. On the softer side so durability is down but that translates to a stickier tyre. Should be around your budget

The reviews seem to be good with S.Drives. Is the 'stick to the road like shit to a blanket' good or bad? Can't work it out lol.

For the love of god don't buy these, they are shit, they don't last, they are rock solid, they cause understeer and even my tyre fitter who is a Falken dealer has told me they are shit.

They are a very expensive budget tyre, they are not an expensive sports tyre for budget money, the only reason people rate them so highly is because they are cheap, and brand new they are better than the old tyres which you're replacing, placebo effect.

I compared brand new ones of them against brand new Toyo Proxes T1Rs and the Toyos were a million times better and only £5 more, which proved my point of them being expensive budget tyres.

Also having a 528i Tourer, I was in a similar position as they aren't cheap for decent boots on these, after good experiences on my 518 E34 I opted for Kumhos, they are pretty damn good, very good in the wet, very good in the dry, good feedback and they are cheap and they last...On my E34 I got 18k miles out of a set and the grip was constant through their life.

I opted for these, same price as the FK452s and they aren't crap

They also rate higher in everything than the FK452s

Slightly exaggerated, they are not "shit" as even confirmed by your own review sources, 169 vs 8, I think they fare well.

Admittedly they are an older tyre so the newer stuff might be better, but 10k on and they are still gripping very well on my motor.

Your suggestion for the Kumhos though, heard good things as well and I will consider them myself come change time.

The Kumhos are excellent, and the same price as the FKs.

I had two sets of wheels, ones with brand new Toyos which were £5 more than the FK452s which were also brand new.
The FKs were numb, no feedback, very little progression, hard and I wore them out very quickly, where as the Toyos lasted twice as long, and were a million times better for £5 more a corner, really is a no brainer.

FKs need to be looked at without the rose tints on, as I said before people have tyres that are old and crap due to lack of tread, and can't remember what they felt like new, they put the FKs on and "OMGLOLZROFL!!!!!111oneontwo!! These are amazing"...when in fact they are just better than the worn out ones you replaced Wink

Rose tints firmly off and still disagree Laughing Calling them shit is an injustice as your reviews point out.
I had brand spanking new p7000s on all corners when I bought the motor, now they were poor to use Shocked , even with the AWD setup. And I rate the FKs above the Potenzas I had on my lightly power hiked very rear friendly SX, now they are overpriced for performance.

I'm not saying they are the best, but they are faaaarrrrr from worst Wink

Having run both back to back on my 330d, I couldn't agree less. The 452's are a much, MUCH better tyre than the Kumho, in the wet especially.

As for Falken's not lasting - I'm on 15,000 miles out of my rear set, and they've still got another couple of thousand in them easy, and I'm not easy on them.

I had Kumho Ecsta sports on my Subaru. They were shit.

I had Falken FK452's on my BMW 3 series. They were excellent. In fact, they were so good that I couldn't get the car sideways any more. Even in the wet. Even if I really really tried.

Good tyres. Pits is just wrong.

I've had Kumho Ecsta Sports (i'm guessing Kumho HM are the touring equivalent, so will last longer, be harder) on the front axle of my Civic for the past 2 years. I think they are great tyres.

Lasted 15000 which perhaps isn't the best, but they grip and grip and grip, and then let you know when they are going to let go. I like them.

Will probably buy them again.

I think it's very hard to say "this is a good tyre, this is a shit tyre". We all drive differently, all think we are better drivers than we are, and probably don't drive anywhere near the limits for the most part.

I'm still not convinced you can really feel that much from car tyres, its mostly in your head. Same with bikes. For example, I once crashed on Avon tyres, so to my mind they are shit and don't grip. Will never buy them again, but they may in fact be okay tyres for someone else.

I also bought Firestone tyres, three times in a row because they were on offer, and I think the name sounds cool. No idea how good they were.

For no apparent reasons I like bridgestone, but for car tyres they are too expensive, when Falken, Kumho and Toyo all offer alternatives for not quite two thirds of the price.

Tyres seem to work differently on different vehicles. Toyo T1Rs are much better on my MX5 than they were on my 200SX with extra weight and power. Eagle F1s have been good on all my cars but I think they've stopped making them.

Also people's opinions are based on past experience...if they come from a set of Linglongs they'll probably say P6000s are marvellous when in fact they're utterly, utterly shit.

Basically it's hard to gauge...you need to find someone that has used lots of good tyres on the same car to get a worthwhile opinion. Find a BMW forum basically, that's what I did when picking tyres for my 328i.

Oh, but whatever you do, don't put Wanlis on like I had on it when I bought it...

Or buy them, and have all the thrills of high speed driving within the legal speed limits Wink

Less fun than it looks...it got away from you so quick and took so long to stop sliding that you just couldn't carry any corner speed at all. Quite good in the dry but I've always found beemers deathly boring to drive anyway...my MX5 is light years ahead fun wise wet or dry.

This is it with Toyo T1Rs in the rain...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29OTLWnDDQE&list=UUNohROcuyAD85CXJDQVaJ9g&index=2&feature=plcp

Still a handful but much more controllable. They're hopeless track tyres in the dry but not too bad in the wet.

I seem to have a video to illustrate every comment I make in this thread Laughing

I shit myself the first time I lost it coming off a roundabout. I wasn't even going for it! TC was on too.

Well there's the problem with TC...false sense of security Laughing

BMWs are a bit of a handful when they go unexpectedly as they weigh a shitload and have very slow steering racks.

I once nearly killed a 530d on a wet roundabout. The arse end swung out beautifully but a lot quicker and further than i was expecting. After that i put the tc back on. Laughing

I would go with them then...I've tried a lot of tyres over the years and found them excellent in wet and dry conditions on at least 4 different cars.

Terrible on track but I assume the car will only be used on the road?

You'll get 225/55-16 Toyo T1Rs for about £90 a corner.

Interesting; as they did very well in reviews for road-performance I presumed they'd also be good on track?

Still not done a car track day yet.
