What tyres

Evening all!

My tyres are getting close to needing replacing, and I'm after some advice.

In the past I've just put the cheapest ones on (£30 a corner), on a Punto.

Changed my ways now, and looking for something decent, but not going to kill my bank balance (£100 a corner ideally).

I've got a BMW 528i, and the tyre size is 225/55/R16, speed rating is V.

Anyone have any advice on what ones are worth getting?

Depends what you want out of the tyres really.

225/55-16 is a poular size, so getting good tyres for <£100 a corner will be easy, especially if you are buying 4 from a tyre shop, you'll get a good deal.

Currently got Yokohama S-drives on the Clio. A little more suited to all weather compared to the Pradas (Which I initially wanted), but do stick to the road like shit to a blanket in the dry.

Will get them for <£100 each.

Falken FK 452s if you can atill get them. On the softer side so durability is down but that translates to a stickier tyre. Should be around your budget

I had Kumho Ecsta sports on my Subaru. They were shit.

I had Falken FK452's on my BMW 3 series. They were excellent. In fact, they were so good that I couldn't get the car sideways any more. Even in the wet. Even if I really really tried.

Good tyres. Pits is just wrong.

I've had Kumho Ecsta Sports (i'm guessing Kumho HM are the touring equivalent, so will last longer, be harder) on the front axle of my Civic for the past 2 years. I think they are great tyres.

Lasted 15000 which perhaps isn't the best, but they grip and grip and grip, and then let you know when they are going to let go. I like them.

Will probably buy them again.

I think it's very hard to say "this is a good tyre, this is a shit tyre". We all drive differently, all think we are better drivers than we are, and probably don't drive anywhere near the limits for the most part.

I'm still not convinced you can really feel that much from car tyres, its mostly in your head. Same with bikes. For example, I once crashed on Avon tyres, so to my mind they are shit and don't grip. Will never buy them again, but they may in fact be okay tyres for someone else.

I also bought Firestone tyres, three times in a row because they were on offer, and I think the name sounds cool. No idea how good they were.

For no apparent reasons I like bridgestone, but for car tyres they are too expensive, when Falken, Kumho and Toyo all offer alternatives for not quite two thirds of the price.

Tyres seem to work differently on different vehicles. Toyo T1Rs are much better on my MX5 than they were on my 200SX with extra weight and power. Eagle F1s have been good on all my cars but I think they've stopped making them.

Also people's opinions are based on past experience...if they come from a set of Linglongs they'll probably say P6000s are marvellous when in fact they're utterly, utterly shit.

Basically it's hard to gauge...you need to find someone that has used lots of good tyres on the same car to get a worthwhile opinion. Find a BMW forum basically, that's what I did when picking tyres for my 328i.

Oh, but whatever you do, don't put Wanlis on like I had on it when I bought it...

Less fun than it looks...it got away from you so quick and took so long to stop sliding that you just couldn't carry any corner speed at all. Quite good in the dry but I've always found beemers deathly boring to drive anyway...my MX5 is light years ahead fun wise wet or dry.

Still a handful but much more controllable. They're hopeless track tyres in the dry but not too bad in the wet.

I once nearly killed a 530d on a wet roundabout. The arse end swung out beautifully but a lot quicker and further than i was expecting. After that i put the tc back on.

I would go with them then...I've tried a lot of tyres over the years and found them excellent in wet and dry conditions on at least 4 different cars.

Terrible on track but I assume the car will only be used on the road?
