On the way home tonight in the heavy downpour on the A13 (London), I'm filtering from canning town towards Beckton at about 30mph as visability aint to good, notice another bike coming up quick behind me, obviously a quicker filterer than me so I find a gap, pull in and give him a wave to go past, as he passed me he then starts sticking his leg out and wiggling it, I take it this is a thank you but it really brought a smile to my face Laughing was chuckling to myself the rest of the way home, cheered me up no end after a crap dayat work..lol

Safest way I suppose Razz A bloke I ride with every now and then wiggles his right leg/foot about while over taking to say "it's safe to follow me/there's room for more" Laughing Had no idea what he was doing until I asked, but even then his idea of safe is different to mine on tight country roads Shocked

Leg lifting/foot waggling is the norm in europe, and it seems to be getting more popular here too. They dont really do the nodding thing in France and i assume its the same in the rest of europe.

I hang out a right leg when letting the guy know behind me that I have noticed him and he can pass. I haven't done it in thanks though.

I nod or if the left hand is free, a salute and a chuckle to myself.

I started leg waving after other bikes let me past due to having muffs on during winter. Safer than pulling hands out for a cheery wave, especially when filtering.

Been doing it for years, and noticed loads of other people doing the same.

The worst is when your sat behind someone and they refuse to move though. Was filtering down the A13 towards Sadlers Farm a couple of weeks ago, in a queue of about 4 bikes, and the guy at front would not move, despite having more than enough opportunities to.

If I pass other bikers I just stick a thumb up while still holding the bars, subtle but at least I acknowledge others.

Funny you say this, I've just been over to France, and when all the bikers overtake they stick their leg out to let the cars know they are coming back in. Laughing

At least I think thats what they are doing! Wonder why they don't just indicate?

P.s Some of the roads in France were jizz worthy..

Thumbs Up

The strangest thing happened.

I was riding home from [where-ever] just minding my own business and this guy on a bike looked at me and nodded. It was like love at first sight. Wub

I was so happy that I started shaking all over and fumbling and I nodded back just as he was passing the other way.

I just thought I'd share it all with you. Do you guys all nod too?

A leg out means 'thanks' in France.

Experienced this for the first time in Belgium.
Was strange seeing a line of bikes passing you sticking their leg out.
If someone is courteous as i pass, i usually raise my fingers off the bar as a sort of wave...i don’t find the leg thing comfortable.

In enduros, when a faster rider catches a slower rider on the course, the slower rider *should* allow the faster rider to pass.

It is then sportsmanship for the faster rider to stick his leg out as he passes the slower rider, to acknowledge the sportsmanship of the slower rider.

I still give a cheery wave......or a left-right-left on the indicators.

car drivers don't recognise leg signals at all, they think you are just stretching your legs on your motorbike.
