I just got a bike for my brother to learn on, it was cheap and wont start, but other than that is in good condition. Its been sitting outside for a year. chain is rusted to fuck.

What size chain does it use? 428 x ?

It turns over and can smell fuel in exhaust.

got the spark plug out, and it wont spark.

1) it turns over with the kill switch in either position? is this normal for a chinky bike?

2) No spark from HT lead.

3) multimeter reads 1v on the coil terminals. I was expecting 12v, but it might be too short for my meter to pick up?

I should probably check the grounds, most electics work, no indicators or horn tho.

does this bike have points or eleccy timing? what should I check if the coil is fine...

There is also some worrying grinding ? marks on the forks and front brake hoses, I think they must have rubbed...

It'll most likely be CDI, as opposed to points ignition.
From what I remember of my Chinese thing, the killswitch stops it from sparking, not turning over, so I'd have the switchgear apart, and check the state of the contacts. I've been inside Chinese switchgear before, and it's not very complicated, so don't worry about getting confused when you've got it apart; it's really, really simply laid out.

These are based on the Suzuki GS/GN gubbings I believe, is there a switch on the side stand? If it's been outside the connections might be crusty (?)

No indicators or horn points at a flat, or very low, battery. Quite possibly not helped by a corroded terminal or 10 somewhere.

Charge the battery overnight, or hook it up to a decent (car or bike) battery. If that doesn't make much difference, clean up the earthing points. Start at the battery and work forwards. If there is an earth from the battery negative to the frame, this is the most likely one to be a problem.

Nah using a car battery... the orginal was flat and cant find my charger.

I checked most of the grounds. Havent opened up the headlight yet, but I think most of the wiring and switch gear are gone. I will be rewiring it next week but want engine running first...

Piccy below, not bad for £200 Smile

Another vote for the CDI, had a Vonroad 125 scoot gifted to me from a mate and turned out to be the CDI that had gone kaput seems to be a point of fault on chinky bikes.

side stand cut out switch is most likely stuck in. follow the wires back to its connection point and disconnect. its a common fault i often offer customers the option to remove it because of this fault.

Usually stops it turning over though.

it was the sidestand switch. thanks.

she runs! can't get a chain today wemoto is shut Sad

other than that, the wheels don't turn very freely. no play in wheel so not sure if bearings rusted or brakes binding...

needs new brake fluid tho, rear brake has a poo.brown colour to it.

should I change fork oil? bike almost 3 years old.

TGB interested in doing the brakes and forks? two things I can't really be fucked with myself.

Good news fella, I suggested the side stand switch as my GN had the same problem. Glad she's running, seems a good buy for £200! Thumbs Up

Hi I am hoping someone could give me some advice, I have the above bike and am getting no spark, have replaced wiring loom as was in a bad state, new ignition coil, new cdi unit. still no joy. I have looked at the side stand switch but it seems that it has been cut off and there are no wires to trace back to the loom. Its driving me crazy trying to figure it out. Thanks for any advice jamie

There should be a pair of bullet connectors dangling down under the left plastic, they need to be plugged together for bike to spark (switch should be open with stand down).

It should not be removed.. if its dodgy replace with one from a proper bike. It is very easy to ride off with the side stand down Laughing
