Hi,
I have a '97 Honda CG 125 and I noticed on the way home from work that the bike was making a noise which I hadn't heard before.

What I believe has happened is that the rear sprocket has come loose because of the cush drives. Please see the video I took of it being loose: https://vimeo.com/43684190

Is this an easy fix? If so, how much roughly will this cost to fix (in £)?

Many thanks for any replies in advance.

Get it of for a proper look. Dont think that is your cush drive rubbers or whatever it uses. Looks more like sprocket carrier bearing. DIY job around 20 quid.

Ditto to the above.

If its just the bearing though I would say the price would be nearer £8 and that's with a new dust seal also.

However if you have ridden it much distance in that condition you may have butchered the cush also.

Nick.

Definitely looks to be the sprocket carrier bearing as suggested in previous posts.
Quite an easy fix and as Nick says wont cost more than a tenner from your local bearing factors to put right.

Thanks all for your replies.

I rode approximately 2 miles with it in this condition, maybe a bit more as I may not have heard the noise before.

Not only the bearing - looks like the studs have come away from the carrier as well because the sprocket is coming away by itself. Stripped threads in the carrier - new carrier time - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-CG125-SPROCKET-CARRIER-REAR-/270855518837?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item3f103f3a75#ht_501wt_936

I think you may be bang on the money there. I tried to tighten all of the nuts and two of them wouldn't tighten at all. I think I'd be able to replace that myself, however, if there is anything else that needs doing whilst replacing the carrier, I'd be a bit out of my depth.

You should be fine with the one linked. If it needs a new bearing all you are doing is taking out a retaining clip and banging the old one out. Fit new in reverse. Just remember what way round your wheel spacers came of for when you put it back togeather.

actually, looking at your video, your cg rear wheel is the same as mine. no sprocket carrier.

the cush drive rubbers press into the wheel, the nuts on the sprocket, bolt onto special bolts, threaded on one end, and plain shaft on the other end, these slide into the cush rubbers and the large circlip holds the sprocket tight against the wheel (laterally)

the reason why the nuts just seem to spin is because there's nothing holding the bolt / shaft to stop them spinning. to tighten them you have to be able to see the other side of the sprocket and get a spanner on the bolts.

Ah ha! I'm glad you pointed out that my CG doesn't have the sprocket carrier, it's the older version I have without one. It does seem like the clip is missing. I have a Haynes manual on it's way to me. I'm guessing that I need to open the drum up to see the other side of where the bolts are?

Thanks very much for your reply, very helpful Smile

no, all you need to do is remove the rear wheel.

the sprocket and the pins that are bolted to the sprocket will come out as one unit. you tighten them up, then slide the sprocket / pin assembly onto the wheel. the pins locate into the cush drive rubbers, and the sprocket locates onto a circular boss which sticks out the side of the wheel.

you then drop a shim onto the top of the sprocket and clip the circlip onto the wheel which holds the whole lot together.

That sounds quite simple. I'm struggling to find the circlip needed though. Would this one be suffice or do I need a bigger one? https://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewitem?itemId=160801475737
