Hi, I've got a 1989 Honda MTX 125. For some reason in 6th gear it is restricted to 30mph. Does anyone know the cause/fix?

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.

Hi

No standard reason for that.

UK ones were restricted to 9kW (~12hp), by missing off the power valve setup (not really possibly to retrofit without a lot of work) and by the exhaust. But nothing to limit speed beyond the power.

All the best

Keith

Simplest way, buy a complete engine from a full power (ie, non UK). Probably the cheapest way as well.

To do it to a UK engine, you would need a full power barrel, or some machining work on the existing barrel to remove the cast in plug for the power valve. Also need the valve and linkage down to the clutch cover, and a full power clutch cover or a modified clutch cover.

The basic drive parts new from Honda (using https://www.cmsnl.com )

Spindle,herp - € 32.00
Pl,herp Arm Guide - € 3.00
Collar,herp Arm - € 4.00
Spg,herp Arm Set - € 3.50
Gide herp Spindle - € 18.50
Arm,herp Comp. - € 5.00
Guide,valve - € 14.50
Valve herp - € 13.50
Retainer,valve - € 6.00
Collar - € 3.50
Cover,herp Valve - € 5.50
Cotter, Valve - € 2.00
Clip,oil Tube - € 2.50
Nut, Tappet. - € 1.50
Wash,thrust,5.5mm - € 1.00
Wash,seal 20x25 - € 1.00
Oil Seal - € 3.00
Oil.seal.5.5x11x4 - € 3.00
O-ring,178x24 - € 2.00
Nut,flange,6mm - € 1.00

That is ~€126 for the minor bits (some of which no longer seem to be available).

If you can't modify the clutch cover and barrel then they are €212.50 and €445.50 respectively.

How far beyond 30 will it go in 5th? Would expect it to manage 60+mph in 5th if healthy.

All the best

Keith
