Edit, title should read: Chargers with the "oomph" to start the bike with no battery
__________________________________________________

So, this morning got me thinking about a charger I would like to own.

For those occasions where your battery is dead and leaving it on an optimate every night isn't an option, but you need to go out and you know that by the time you've arrived at your destination your battery will be good enough to get you home.

I'd like some sort of power supply that I could simply crocodile-clip on to the (+) and (-) on the battery and have it supply the bike with enough power to allow me to crank the bike. Essentially enough power to crank the bike if there was no battery in there.

Something <=£10 is really the range I'm looking for. I'm a cheap git. I've also been considering keeping a spare battery in my room as a "just in case", but as I said previously, I'm a cheap git.

Is there anything like this? Not sure what to look for really. I have a 12v charger but it lacks the "oomph" to start the bike.

Wouldn't normally use a charger to start the bike.
Best bet is to get a powerpack - like this.
They can start the car so a bike is no hassle.
Effectively a spare 12v battery in a box.
Prices vary but can be had at autojumbles (e.g. Rufforth) for reasonable pennies.

They don't exist, even a small engine will pull 30+ amps to crank.

he's thinking of this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BATTERY-CHARGER-BOOSTER-CAR-BOOSTER-CHARGER-630-MODEL-/160819279645?pt=UK_Recovery_Tools&hash=item257193771d#ht_1945wt_1037

cheaper to get another battery and a trickle charger. Or if you want something with some juice, an old car battery usually have hell alot of ooomph power to start a bike still.

I use my dad's old rover battery for this purpose. Its on the way out but stick it on charge and is still perfectly suitable for jump starting the bike. I have cranked the bike like 20 times for 10 secs burst so they do work.

Why bother? Buy a new battery and / or sort your charging system
out. Your battery shouldn't be die in normal use.

Sure they exist. My old man had one that could start diesel engines, it was a big old lump of a thing on it's own trolley with leads as thick as your thumb, and it would eat fuses for a pastime.

Yes indeed; I have two chargers with 'boost' fucntions that will start a 2500cc td engine, so have no problems with even a bigger bike that doesn't have a battery in.
I believe one claims up to 120A 'boost' and the other 180A.

The resettable trip stopped working on one. A 30A fuse replacing it blew too easily with cars, but two 30A fuses in parallel have only blown once so far.

Mine are smallish units, but as above you can get some really chunky ones, including 24v units that will trucks.

While it's useful to have around, I'd go with a proper battery.
Or a jump pack and charge the jump pack over night - one with a pump in too is always useful to have around.

Was this a mad scientists project? Wink Once you get up to normal sized engines, say a 1500 diesel, you're pulling 100 or more amps at crank over. A 60A/h battery can only crank an engine for 2-3mins, which gives you some indication of the kind of current load.

I've never seen any consumer grade equipment that can do this. Even the industrial chargers are split output rails.

The problem you have with electric motors is that they stall and can surge, so even if you could find a PSU which can do the amperage you need, you'd need one which can handle a surge of 3x that if the motor stalled.

If you have enough power to initiate cranking you're not going to stall the starter.

Even if that were a worry, a higher up model like this would easily cover that.
As mentioned, one of mine offers 180A and that was a (relatively to the above) 'cheap' one from Halfords.

Certainly not for under a tenner, but the best bet for the OP would definitely seem to be to fix the bike.

Nope. Nearest hill is ~1/2mile away and it's not even a steep one. Was just looking for an easier option for when actually at home.

Tried that Wink Title must be too long because when I clicked submit it chopped the portion off the end.

Ah yeah, much more expensive than I was thinking. I thought there would be some sort of cheap thing capable of doing it, bviously not though.

I think I've sorted out the battery draining fault now (wasn't a charging fault) but I just wanted something "just in case".

Breakdown came out to me this morning though as the bike refused to start and started pissing fuel. His first remarks "you need a new battery". Upon taking the seat off "bloody hell, that things older than I am" Laughing Guess I need a new battery. I can keep this one as a last-resort spare.

Carbs need stripping/cleaning because it seems like the left one (when sitting on the bike) is sticking. Somehow fuel managed to get in to the airbox - it was leaking from the pipe coming from the airbox Shocked

Definitely something I'd like to have one day. I can't really afford something that expensive though or store it anywhere even with moving to uni soon.

Nice to know that these things exist though for the future Thumbs Up
